Mortal Kombat 1 was announced dead earlier this year with the release of its Definitive Edition, but as Shang Tsung once said: “Death is only a portal.” NetherRealm Studios is taking that quote to the next level by actually teasing “Exciting Changes” coming to Mortal Kombat 1, probably bringing the game back to life even if it doesn’t translate to new content.

As per an official post by the MK page on X, the studio will be releasing some changes to Mortal Kombat 1, altering the dead situation of the game. The update will become available after the EVO 2025 Tournament that takes place at Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall from August 1st to 3rd. Anytime after that is a potential release date for the “Exciting changes” that we’re looking for.

Now, how is Mortal Kombat 1 still getting updates after it was announced “done,” you ask? It could be due to the shifts and role changes at WB Games and NetherRealm Studios. MK1 was announced dead in May, and later in June, Shaun Himmerick, the man behind MK9 and Shaolin Monks, became the Senior Vice President of WB Games, overseeing not only the Mortal Kombat franchise but also Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and DC games.

To have a NetherRealm Studios member in a leading role at WB Games, it makes sense if a shift of focus is authorized. Additionally, with the Mortal Kombat 2 movie trailer setting the record for the most-viewed R-rated trailer in history, keeping fans hyped with the game is a clever engagement strategy.

As of right now, there is no official info on what these “Exciting Changes” for Mortal Kombat 1 could be. The developers had announced minor fixes and balancing updates to come even after the game’s lifecycle ends, but in no dimension does that translate to exciting changes. We’ll have to wait and see.

Amir is an absolute Call of Duty nerd, preferring shooter games more than everything. However, he does like to do uppercuts in Mortal Kombat and feel the NOS going through the engines in Need For Speed games.
