As if it crawled close through a vent and then sprang into the public’s face, Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 has released early on Steam as of July 23, jumping ahead of its anticipated August 2015 release date.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 is the final installation of the original Five Nights at Freddy’s storyline, and this time, we’re outside of the world of old-fashioned restaurants with the checkered-tiled floors, the peeling wallpaper, and the insufficient defenses of the security monitor’s booth.

But the animatronics are still around. In fact, they’ve busted loose, and now you play as a child. Mm-hmm, that’s right. Prepare to soak your bed sheets. Because in this Freddy’s, you’re at the one place you should always feel safe: home. This change comes as a welcome shift for the Freddy’s games, as the series’ main source of complaints have regarded the overly-similar gameplay shown from sequel to sequel.

Says the game’s official Steam page, “Playing as a child whose role is yet unknown, you must safeguard yourself until 6am by watching the doors, as well as warding off unwanted creatures that may venture into your closet or onto the bed behind you.” Whose role is yet unknown, you say? I, for one, sincerely hope this child is an exorcist.

Even as an adult playing this game, you should feel those latent fears left over from childhood creeping back when you play; fears of something hiding under your bed or behind you in the hall, waiting for the moment when you turn around so it can leap at you with bared fangs and creepy, scratchy fingernails. Fears of being too small and too slow.

“You have only a flashlight to protect yourself. It will scare away things that may be creeping at the far end of the hallways, but be careful, and listen.” (Listen? If only they put in the same technology from Alien Isolation that made you hold your breath! How great would that be?) “If something has crept too close, then shining lights in its eyes will be your end.”

(By now) old favorites, Freddy Fazbear, Chica, Bonnie, Foxy, and apparently “even worse things that lurk in the shadows” are making their return. Or, should we say, their final bid to escape, to take their license to kill that they keep hidden from the public (who knows these machines walk around at night! No one, surely, by game 4,) and torment us one more time.

I myself am too much of a scaredy-cat to play these games. But if you’re so inclined, Five Nights At Freddy’s 4 can be purchased on Steam by any and all brave enough PC users.
