Is April 24th here yet? HBO dropped this little beauty on us today: the first full trailer for Game of Thrones season six. All pictures in this article are shots from the trailer. Let’s watch it and see what we can put together from it:

Let that one sink in a little bit. Obviously, there are SPOILERS ahead, but let’s try to break down what we can from that glorious 101 seconds. A lot of this is speculation as well, but let’s see what we’ve got.

We start out with some serious depression setting in. Jon Snow, dead by the swords of his own brothers. Jamie Lannister, returning home to Cersei to tell her that their daughter is dead. Ramsay and Roose Bolton having a staredown, probably due to two very important people (Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy) escaping from right underneath Ramsay’s nose.

Someone's getting flayed.
Someone’s getting flayed.

The sense of loss continues. Melisandre having a crisis of conscience and deciding that her god and his flames are liars. If she believes that, how is she going to bring Jon Snow back to life like everyone wants?

Jorah will clearly be on a quest to reunite with Daenerys this season, who appears to be returning to Vaes Dothrak. This is the sacred city of the Dothraki, where fighting is strictly forbidden. Maybe Daenerys will finally unite all of the Dothraki riders here (even though she is currently a captive)?

Still no Westeros for Dany.
Still no Westeros for Dany.

We get shots of the High Sparrow, speaking of overthrowing an empire, Sansa Stark looking forlorn, and Tyrion speaking of the terrifying “great game” that the lords are playing. Speaking of terrifying, we get one shot of Dany’s dragon high in the sky before the trailer changes the tone from sad and introspective…

Only thing worse than Gregor Clegane? This guy.

… to Cersei choosing violence. That’s what I’m talking about, Game of Thrones!

Cersei’s giant zombie guard starts us on a blistering who’s who. King Tommen, the Night’s Watch, Arya, Littlefinger, Margaery (who looks like she is in pretty bad shape); we are quickly refreshed on where everyone is and how they are doing (badly, in most cases).

You're still my #1, Margaery.
You’re still my #1, Margaery.

During that sequence, watch very closely. It is difficult to tell, but that looks like Ned Stark to me. This might be part of that Tower of Joy flashback that everyone has been talking about. What do you think?

Drawing his blade. Ned, right?
Drawing his blade. Ned, right?

An unmet character (most likely Euron Greyjoy) appears plunging his face into a pool of water, possibly being “drowned,” part of a religious rite of the people of the Iron Isles. Brienne is being crazy badass, as she will. We revisit the Hall of Faces.

At the 1:12 mark, we get what could be a major tell: Melisandre preparing to… ahem… “make some magic,” quickly juxtaposed with a shot of Jon Snow’s body being prepared for burial. Surely Melisandre’s existential crisis will end in time for her to intervene?

Or they're checking to see if he has a fever?
Or they’re checking to see if he has a fever?

Another standout quickly following is Queen Margaery taking the hand of the High Sparrow. Is she actually coming to the side of the Faith Militant? Or is this just a ploy to get out of prison before retaliating? Or, as a third option, is she joining forces with the Faith to help bring down the Lannisters?

Lest you forgot, 1:18 reminds us that Arya is blind. We also appear to get one more Tower of Joy moment (it does look like Ned with his long brown hair again); also, check out the sigil on the armor. Who might we have there?

Three headed dragon sigil!
Three headed dragon sigil!

We then cut back to a heavily armored group riding to the steps of the Great Sept. Holy war is coming to Game of Thrones.

Prepare for trouble.
Prepare for trouble.

The high octane section ends with Bran, who is finally back! And can stand, apparently? And is encountering the Night’s King? Maybe he should go back to his safe spot.

Gah!
Gah!

Finally, the trailer ends with Davos, wielding Longclaw, preparing to do some fighting against what appears to be some of the Brothers of the Night’s Watch.

Season six will be upon us in a little over a month. Make sure you come back to The Nerd Stash for Game of Thrones news leading up to it and for weekly episode reviews once the season starts.
