Ever since HoYoverse took the world of gacha games by storm with Genshin Impact, we’ve seen it grow considerably. We’re not talking about the content or characters, which are a feat by themselves; we’re talking about the narrative elements and how much they’ve improved. This becomes clearer the more updates the game gets. With Fontaine finally arriving at the game, players have jumped to the story to see what’s in store for the Traveler and Paimon, and we have to say, this time, things take a darker turn for our heroes, which makes the story of Genshin Impact 4.0 a breath of fresh air.

As mentioned, HoYoverse has improved upon its prime game’s storytelling. Mondstadt and Liyue served as the bases for many of the elements we have in the narrative of Genshin Impact; however, things started to get better with the arrival of Inazuma. Since then, HoYoverse has focused on creating memorable characters and intriguing stories that unfold throughout a nation’s story arc, something that repeats in Genshin Impact 4.0’s story but in a better way.

When you arrive at the Hydro Nation, things start as usual; you meet new characters who introduce you to the head of the nation, or Archon, as the game calls them, and wait for troubles to hit the fan. Yet, this time, the mystery remains around the corner for our protagonists. It doesn’t take much for the Traveler and Paimon to get sucked into new trouble they’ll have to solve. However, this time, the stakes are higher, and the fate of a nation lies in the hands of a few people and a prophecy that dwells on Fontaine’s shores.

One thing that makes the Genshin Impact 4.0 story worth experiencing is how the game presents it. Ever since we saw the trailer, we all knew justice would be a recurring topic in this nation; it is, in fact, the most crucial issue in this place. Trials are a sort of entertainment for the inhabitants of Fontaine, and the Oratrice automates the justice system. This machine delivers judgment in every trial of the nation. The latter is why Lyney is in Fontaine, and Lyney is in Fontaine, and why he believes the device might cause the prophecy.

This topic is fresh as it moves away from things we’ve seen in previous nations, or at least the first ones. Most of the time, the story was entirely predictable, and players just rushed it to get the rewards while not paying attention to what it was about. This time, though, the narrative is much more engaging, and if you thought Sumeru had raised the bar, Fontaine has done it more than its predecessor.

Ripples in a Nation

The big win of Genshin Impact 4.0’s story is that everything that happens leads to something bigger. The first act starts with a small show that turns into a big trial with huge revelations and then leads to the Traveler and Paimon joining an organization to help them solve a case regarding the disappearance of young women. We know it’s a mouthful, but the story is one of the best HoYoverse has launched in years.

While Sumeru focused on Nahida and presented us with some fantastic story moments, Fontaine is all about its people and their struggles. You can see the flaws in the justice system, despite being shown as perfect, and how people look for justice for themselves and their families. Fontaine brings a set of missions that’ll thrust you to a case deeper than the waters around this nation that only get more questions the further you dive into it.

Seeing what things hook players when a new nation gets put in the game is fun. When Sumeru was released, we couldn’t stop playing it due to its gameplay and area design’s sense of freedom and verticality. However, Fontaine brings that but shines even more with its story. The cinematics are much better; the story is full of intrigue, mystery, betrayal, and more elements that will let anyone craving more Archon quests. Undoubtedly, HoYoverse has released the best nation and has done it as a complete package. While some might only want to play the game to earn Primogems and level up characters, the story of Genshin Impact 4.0 is one of the best we’ve experienced in years.

Genshin Impact 4.0 is available now on Mobile, PC, and PlayStation.
