God of War is Getting a Reboot Again for a ‘Different Creative Direction,’ but Not on Consoles

Seems like a calm and reasonable decision

After Amazon’s success with the Fallout TV adaptation, it now has its sights on Sony’s God of War. However, things are taking a slower turn for the PlayStation franchise since the God of War TV adaptation now has to start from scratch. That’s because showrunner and executive producers Rafe Judkins, Hawk Ostby, and Mark Fergus have left the production.

Now, Amazon Studios and PlayStation Productions are seeking a new showrunner for the God of War adaptation. It’s essentially a reboot for the story and the production. Amazon also plans “to move in a different creative direction” with God of War though no specifics have been revealed yet.

Oddly enough, Amazon and even Sony actually praised the screenplays that Judkins, Ostby, and Fergus have written. That didn’t stop the pre-production hiccups, however. Amazon is now planning to put together a new creative team and writers’ room to reinvent and reboot the story for the God of War adaptation.

Not the First Creative Reboot for God of War

It’s worth noting that the God of War video game series has also gone through a rather dramatic reboot. The 2018 version shifted to Norse mythology, away from the old Greek mythology setting. Consequently, the reboot has also featured a more subdued and more mature Kratos. He’s now a far cry from the angry and impulsive pre-reboot Kratos.

Amazon’s original plan was to start with the Norse Saga or the reboot of the game franchise and skip the first three God of War games. The move has worried some fans. After all, Kratos’ chapter in the Norse Saga only made sense since it followed after the protagonist’s Greek pantheon genocide.

Granted, the 2018 reboot for God of War has proven to be more popular compared to the Greek mythology games. That’s likely one of the reasons why the God of War adaptation will choose to focus on the Norse chapter of God of War.
