Henry Cavill may be rooting for the Jersey Rugby Club and the Kansas City Chiefs, but he certainly isn’t a fan of ‘overused’ and confusing sex scenes. The British actor, who recently scored the titular role in the new action/thriller movie Argylle, admitted his true feelings on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Cavill, joined by director Matthew Vaughn, said he believed such intimate moments should be left to the viewer’s imagination.
Henry Cavill Finds Sex Scenes Distasteful At Times
“I don’t understand them, I’m not a fan,” Cavill said. “I think there are circumstances where a sex scene actually is beneficial to a movie, rather than just the audience, but I think sometimes they’re overused these days.”
But his distaste didn’t end there. The Witcher actor also shared how ‘uncomfortable these particular instances can be.
“It’s when you have a sense where you’re going, ‘Is this really necessary or is it just people with less clothing on?’ And that’s when you start to get more uncomfortable, and you’re thinking, ‘There’s not a performance here, there’s not a piece which is going to carry through to the rest of the movie.’”
Although he did mention how sex scenes can be productive at times, his general beliefs are that a lot of adult-only content exists solely to appease the viewer. He finds these interludes to be more public fanfare than actual plot material.
“Most of the time, the human imagination is going to trump it. So it can be a little bit of a cop-out if a TV show or a movie is just filled with gyrating bodies, and you’re going, ‘Okay, but what is this doing for us apart from the idea of, oh naked person, great.’”
‘Argylle’ Director Matthew Vaughn Echoes That Sentiment
Vaughn chimed in with his own opinion, which seemed to effectively echo that of Cavill. “The thing I really don’t understand — and you’ve noticed I don’t really direct them because I can’t get my head around [them] — [is] sex scenes,” he said. “It’s just something I don’t understand.”
And Cavill Isn’t the Only One
But Vaughn and Cavill aren’t the only Hollywood stars who would rather axe sex scenes from entertainment. Actress Sydney Sweeney once asked Euphoria creator Sam Levinson to cut out a few of her topless scenes.
Levinson gladly obliged to create a safer space for Sweeney, who portrays Cassie Howard.
“There are moments where [my character] Cassie was supposed to be shirtless and I would tell Sam, ‘I don’t really think that’s necessary here,’” she said to the Independent. “He was like, ‘OK, we don’t need it.’”
Sadly, despite Cavill rejecting the concept, this won’t be the last we ever hear of unnecessary nudity in the industry.
