Devil May Cryย creator and action gaming visionary Hideki Kamiya alongside E3 2019 fan-favorite Ikumi Nakamura have posted a video on Twitter regarding the possibility of an official sequel to Okami. In the video, the two Japanese industry figures both speak English, and Kamiya says “Okami is going to be back”. Nakamura asks “Really?”, and Kamiya responds with “Really.”

Some people seem to believe an official confirmation that a sequel toย Okamiย is definitely coming, while others are more convinced that it is a public request on behalf of both Nakamura and Kamiya to Capcom to allow Platinum Games to develop the sequel with their approval. Whichever it is, the video and the tweet have already gained immense traction, and if a sequel toย Okamiย is not in development yet, then perhaps the reaction by fans to this tweet can spark some form of positive reaction.
Okamiย is an action-adventure game based around the journey of Amaterasu, the Japanese goddess of the Sun in the form of a white wolf, who with the help of a wandering flea-sized artist named Issun, must save the land of Nippon from multiple encroaching forces of pure malevolent evil. The game was originally released in 2006 at the end of the PS2’s lifespan, and while initially, it sold very poorly, the game was critically acclaimed, and eventually saw sales success through re-releases and an HD remake for modern consoles, as well as a smaller-scale sequel titled Okamiden for the Nintendo DS. It was also the last game developed by Clover Studios’ a subsidiary of Capcom who was tasked with making completely original Intellectual Properties and experimenting with new ideas. Many people including Hideki Kamiya and Atsushi Inaba were key employees at Clover, and they and many other members of the company went on to found Platinum Games after the original studio was closed down by Capcom.
Seeing how many key members of the originalย Okamiย team now work at Platinum Games, it would not just be great to a sequel to such a beloved game being made by such a talented team, but it would also be quite cathartic to see those work worked so hard only for the original game to flop come back to work in the sequel to the now-classic original that took years to find commercial success. Hopefully, this tweet from Kamiya and Nakamura isn’t just a hopeful request, and fans of the original can expect something new and grand from Okamiย as a franchise sometime soon.
