There’s a very high chance that the monster that causes your first “carting” in Monster Hunter Wilds is Rey Dau. Besides being the first flying creature you’ll face, this beast can create a railgun in its head and shoot it at you for an almost one-hit kill. In addition, it can stun you easily, and despite its size, it has a lot of mobility and will make hitting it quite hard. If that isn’t enough, it can also harden some of its body parts to cause more damage and reduce the damage it receives. So yeah, it’s bound to be a fun hunt.
Rey Dau Weaknesses

Rey Dau is one of the most challenging beasts in Monster Hunter Wilds, and it gets even worse due to its lack of weak points. Fortunately, it is weak to two elements, and you should already have one before facing this monster for the first time. Before we delve into parts and strategies, bring these elements:
- Water
- Ice
Water should be the easy one to get here, as Ice-infused weapons won’t appear until later in the story. Fortunately, Uth Duna should give you some materials to craft weapons of the first elements. Besides that, you could bring Poison, Sleep, Blastblight, or Exhaust weapons, but due to the encounter’s nature and how fast-paced it is, it might be hard to apply some of these elements to Rey Dau.
In terms of its weak point, the only one is its head. You can break its head along with its wings and even sever the tail. But if you really want to damage it, focus on the head at all times. If you do so, you’ll stop the monster’s thunder attack, which is one of the most lethal during the fight.
Hunt Strategies

Once the fight begins, always pay attention to Rey Dau’s head. Once its horns start closing, that means it will launch an attack. However, it can do different attacks. Sometimes, it will charge a huge blast that will stagger Rey Dau for a bit; other times, it will launch a few blasts in quick succession. Whatever the case may be, always watch your head, and if you see thunder coming in, run away; don’t even bother blocking the blast.
Another thing you need to watch out for is its wings. They will absorb rocks and will become scythe-like weapons. Rey Dau will hover above the ground and then rush toward you to hit you with either of its wings. When this happens, either block or dodge. Other than that, follow the next tips:
- Whenever you mount Rey Dau, go for the tail, not the head.
- Since Rey Dau’s head is its weak spot, many might believe attacking it when mounting the monster is the best idea. Don’t. It will move quite fast and make you lose stamina fast. Instead, go for the tail and try to get as many hits in as possible. You can even sever it after a few tries. Even if you don’t have a weapon with jump attacks, you can use the terrain to mount it.
- If the head is too hard to hit, focus on the wings.
- While the head should be a priority, attacking its wings is also a good idea. By doing so, you can hinder its flying capabilities, which is something good, especially in this encounter. Also, it is much easier to wound the wings than the head, so always aim your focus strikes at these parts.
- Do not lead Rey Dau to another monster.
- Turf wars are great and can usually work in your favor. However, if you lead Rey Dau toward another creature, it will only be worse for you. The fight will become even more chaotic, and instead of hitting Rey Dau, you’ll get squeezed by two monsters. Avoid this at all costs.
Aside from that, bring your best healing items, and if you get stunned, call your Seikret so they can take you away. This can save you from a lethal ray after getting stunned.
