In true survival game fashion, Nightingale will have you breaking rocks in the hot sun; you just can’t fight that law and win. Initially, this feels simple enough until Nightingale starts showing you some shinies you can’t dent with your crude caveman pick. So we’re here to guide you on how to get and farm gems and ore in Nightingale, as well as what you’ll be needing for this endeavor.

But first, you need to locate what these gems and ores look like. Refer to the image above for their appearance in-game. That’s ore on the right and gem on the left.

Gem nodes in Nightingale have crystal formations protruding from rocks, while ore nodes are rocks that have a more bumpy obsidian or metallic appearance.

Sometimes, you can find both types of mining nodes clustered together in rocky places, especially north of the Realmic Transmuter site, near the graveyard on top of a rocky hill (Forest Biome).

This might be a good location if you’re setting up a mining base. Other locations include riversides, cliffsides, and other high-elevation areas. Once you find the nodes and deposits, just strike them repeatedly until they break and pick up the pieces.

Now, here’s the hard part. There are some gem and ore nodes you can’t chip at right away with the lowest-tier mining pick. Most of the gem and ore nodes have a Gear Score requirement, no matter how pretty your mining pick is.

You can find the Gear Score in your inventory (the yellow number) in case you missed it in the tutorial (what with Puck being condescending and all). You need to reach this certain level of Gear Score to mine the corresponding gem and ore nodes.

This also means you need to craft sturdier mining picks to increase your Gear Score, with the Simple Mining Pick being immediately available to you to improve your quality of life. The lowest-tier mining pick is only good for breaking literal common stone. For you to be able to craft the Simple Mining Pick, you need these materials:

  • Stone Block (1)
  • Wood Bundle (1)
  • Straps (2)

The Straps requirement means you need a Tanning Rack first and some animal hide (which you should already have before building a base). As the gem and ore nodes keep getting bigger and increasing their Gear Score requirement, you must keep crafting better equipment to fund your mining operation.
