After narrowly escaping being hanged, Hans is more than ready to leave Trosky Castle. Despite the terrible first impression, Von Bergow believes Hans and Henry’s claim of being messengers. Although Hans successfully delivers the message, Von Bergow refuses to give him a definite answer. Instead, he asks Henry and Hans to visit a nearby noble for assistance in the Back in the Saddle quest. However, something seems off at Nebakov Fortress, and you must investigate thoroughly before continuing the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 main quest.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Back in the Saddle Quest Guide
The first section of the Back in the Saddle quest is quite mundane and relaxing. After speaking with Von Bergow, you can follow the chamberlain to your room, where you’ll find your missing equipment and can rest. You can also visit the stable and speak with Kabat, who will offer you a new horse. Although this new horse has better stats, it’s generally better to stick with Pebbles if you have him.
Once you’re ready, you can speak with Hans, and the two of you will head to Nebakov Fortress in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Besides chatting, you can also race against each other along the way. If you win this casual race, you’ll receive 55 Groschens from Hans.
At the fortress, you will be warmly received by the owner and his men. Hans heads off to speak with the noble, while Henry needs to wait. During this time, you can challenge one of the men to a duel or play a game of dice. Although you may be tempted to skip ahead, you might already notice that something is off with Nebakov Fortress.
How To Investigate Nebakov Fortress in KCD2

There are various people you can talk to at Nebakov Fortress. If you try to get information from your guide, he’ll mention that the nobleman has some great horses, claiming his master got them from his relatives. However, if you speak with the stable hand outside the fortress, he tells a different story. There are certainly quite a number of horses at the fortress, and Henry is growing more suspicious.
During the Back in the Saddle quest, you can participate in another race. Winning this race will earn you a great saddle for free, but it’s unlikely you’ll win if you’re riding Pebbles. Besides that, you can also spend time with Klara. If you want to romance her, you’ll need to help her gather some herbs and heal three wounded soldiers. However, she’s reluctant to talk about the strange happenings at Nebakov Fortress, and pushing her to speak will only make her angry.
How To Sneak Into Prison

If you want to get solid information about Nebakov Fortress, you must sneak into the prison. Unfortunately, the door is locked, and a guard is stationed outside. Attempting to lockpick the door won’t work, as there are too many men patrolling. Instead, you’ll need to steal the prison key from Guard Hertel. Here’s what you must do:
- Enter the kitchen via the door next to the prison.
- Pass through another door to your left.
- Sneak your way behind Guard Hertel and pickpocket him.
- Grab the key and return outside.
- Convince Guard Hertel that someone is looking for him.
Pickpocketing Guard Hertel won’t be easy. I actually failed many times during this section, so I recommend saving before you try it. Aim for a pickpocket time limit of 10 to 12 seconds. The prison key is usually located in the bottom slots.
Once you’re inside, speak with the prisoner. He’ll claim that he’s the real noble and that a group of bandits has taken over Nebakov Fortress. Be warned—you must not waste time inside the prison. The guard won’t stay away for long, and you can only exit through the front door. Don’t waste time asking too many questions—escape quickly.
Afterward, you just need to wait until Hans is done talking with the leader. It usually takes about six hours for him to come out. Once he does, tell him what you’ve discovered, and the two of you will quickly ride away from the fortress.
