Most of the quests you’ll need to complete won’t take you much time, but there are exceptions. One such exception is the rescue of the Grand Duke from the Iron Throne in Baldur’s Gate 3. The quest’s storyline stretches back to Act 1, and you can gradually complete this task as you progress through the game. Gortash and his people have kidnapped the Grand Duke and are holding him captive. You and your team must rescue him from the prison, and you can find out how to do it below.

From the very beginning of the game, you could see how the storyline of this quest was developing. In Act 1, you met the Flaming Fist warriors, who told you that their Grand Duke had been kidnapped and now you have to help find and rescue him. You will learn that he was sent to Moonrise Towers, after which he fell into the hands of Absolute leaders.

In Act 2, you will have to go to Moonrise Towers to learn more about the Grand Duke’s location, but all you will find there is Ketheric Thorm, who you will have to fight. After successfully defeating him, you’ll learn that the Grand Duke is in the hands of Orin and Gortash, who have him locked up in a prison called the Iron Throne. This is where the main events of this long story will take place. Now that we’ve learned a brief history from the first 2 Acts, we can tell you about the events waiting for you in Act 3, including the release of Grand Duke from Iron Throne.

When you get to the gates of Baldur in Act 3, there will be many adventures waiting for you, but if you want to save the Grand Duke, you will need to forget about them for a while. Before rescuing the Grand Duke, his son Wyll will face a decisive choice: to serve Mizora forever, thereby ultimately saving his father, or to break the deal and let the Grand Duke die. Regardless of the decision, you will have time to reach the prisoner and rescue him before he dies.

The first thing you must do to save Duke Ravengard is reach the Iron Throne. Since the prison is very well guarded and difficult to escape or enter, you will need to make quite the effort. To get inside, you’ll need to find Redhammer the Deviser, who can take you to the required location. To meet him, you will need to go to the southwestern part of Lower City, where the shipping house is located. Here, Flymm Cargo has a hatch you can use to meet Redhammer. These are the coordinates of the hatch: X:-155; Y:-165.

It may be challenging to get to it because the door to Flymm Cargo is closed, so climb to the roof to get inside. When you get down there, you have to convince Redhammer to take you to Iron Thorne, after which you can continue your search for the Grand Duke in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Eventually, when you find yourself in prison, you can meet Gortash there, who will blow up the location. You will have a limited number of moves to free the prisoners, so we recommend that you prepare well and save the game before starting. Here are the recommendations we’d like to give you before you start your task:

  • Choose characters with the best agility to be able to move quickly.
  • Make sure you have at least some of these spells:
    • Fly
    • Misty Step
    • Teleportation Circle
    • Dimensional door
  • Stock up on Potion of Speed to be even faster.

To find the Grand Duke, head to his cell is located in the eastern wing of the prison. Use all available spells and potions, because you only have 6 turns to do this, and he’s not the only one you’ll need to save.

After you rescue Wyll’s father and escape from prison, the last thing you need to do is talk to him in your camp. After that, the quest will be complete.
