Humankind delayed

It’s a bit of an unusual title for those who weren’t already clued into the existence of this game. Humankind, a Civilization-style (it’s not harsh to compare) 4X game by Amplitude and Sega was originally scheduled to come out on April 22, but unfortunately, the studio recently announced that the game would be delayed – and instead release in August.

The team, in a post, detailed the reasons behind this decision, citing improvements to “accessibility, pacing and balancing, diplomacy, AI, and much more.”

“The team will be focused on improving areas of work identified by the community during our previous Lucy OpenDev, when players tested out 4 eras and 40 cultures of the game to give us their thoughts,” the studio went on to say. The Lucy version of their game was well received and allowed the developers at Amplitude to gather valuable data on the game. They also released a compilation of in-game stats of players’ habits, in an image below.

In a press release on Twitter, Chief Creative Officer, and studio head Romain de Waubert de Genlis said:

It’s been exciting to see the community get their hands on the game during the last few OpenDev sessions, and hear all the positive (and constructive!) feedback. Players have always been at the heart of Amplitude’s philosophy and releasing Humankind in August will allow us the extra time to keep working with the community and polishing the game for an amazing day one experience.”

#HumankindGame will now be releasing on August 17th.

It’s not all bad news however, as players who pre-order Humankind will get access to two additional avatars to use in-game – Edgar Allan Poe and Lucy.

It’s never an easy decision to make delaying a game – the more high profile a game is, the more agonizing it is to wait for it. Trust me – I suffered through the many, many, many delays that Persona 5 got before it saw its eventual release in the West nearly a year after it came out in Japan. Humankind will (fingers crossed) release on August 17 on Steam, Epic Store, and Google Stadia. What is your reaction to Humankind’s delay? Leave a comment down below.

When I'm not researching games to potentially add to an ever-growing backlog of games I've never finished, I'm scouting the next wonderkid on Football Manager, or adding my 180th hour to my Persona 5 completionist run. Likes games, and likes talking about them. Surprise, right?
