Humphry the Hero Comes Out of Retirement To Tease Us With a Fable Game Release Window

The return of Fable is closer than ever

It feels like forever since the last time I heard anything positive about the development of the next installment of the Fable games series. There had always been rumors circling around, but nothing concrete; until Summer Game Fest. During Xbox‘s Showcase, we were introduced to Humphry, a retired hero forced to return to his former career after a dark force threatens Albion. Well, threatened to return with the actual star of the show. It’s a silly dialogue with the unfaltering Fable character accent, and I couldn’t be more excited for the release.

All we were able to learn from the worldwide premiere is that this installment will essentially be resetting the franchise. The game still takes place in the kingdom of Albion, but it’s unclear if anything accomplished from the previous three games will be present. I mean, there was a point where your character was quite literally royalty in the kingdom. However, the strange accent and all of the powerful magics and fearful enemies return in an all-new adventure.

Where Have You Gone, Fable?

The last main Fable release, Fable 3, was released in 2010, nearly 15 years ago. Since then, there hasn’t been a true sequel or installment that’s really encompassed what the series has to offer. This time around, it looks like we’re getting that back. Now, we haven’t seen anything substantial like gameplay or if there is even a character creator. Personally, I am completely expecting the character creator that slowly evolves your character’s looks depending on the choices you make. Do you want to be evil? You’ll start developing horns and darker features. What if you’d like to be good? Then your eyes will start glowing with heavenly light and your tattoos will glow white. At least, I hope.

We did see some running gameplay, and it looks like we can expect a third-person perspective within a huge open world. Besides that, it looks like the game will encompass the high quality, crafting, and attention to detail that Phil Spencer promised us so many years ago. It’s also incredibly helpful that Andrew Walsh, a senior writer for Horizon Forbidden West, and Anna Megill, a former developer for Remedy Entertainment have joined the development team. We didn’t see him this time, but maybe we will see more of actor Richard Ayoade, who headlined the last trailer released for the game, as the release gets closer.

Fable will be available on PC and Game Pass at some point in 2025.
