Publisher Warner Bros. Interactive announced today that they will be ceasing support of their DC-themed MOBA, Infinite Crisis, in mid-August.

The press release begins: “After much deliberation, we regret to announce the official shutdown of Infinite Crisis. We will end development efforts today and will close the service on August 14, 2015.” Even though development is stopping, the press release goes on to state that the game will continue to be free to play until that day.

Considering Infinite Crisis officially released just a few months ago at the end of March, this is an incredibly fast shut down decision. The game itself brought a unique and interesting license to a difficult to crack genre; Dota 2 and League of Legends currently have a stranglehold on both the competitive E-sports scene as well as the entire MOBA genre. And there are a few others, such as Smite and the new release from Blizzard, Heroes of the Storm, that are also vying to gather enough support to take some of the pie from Dota and LoL. Infinite Crisis brought DC villains and heroes together from the many different comic universes to kill creeps, gain gold and experience, and eventually take the enemy base.

Although the game was lauded as having a positive community in a genre that generally houses toxic teammates, it was criticized for a few things as well. Long queue times waiting to get into matches plagued the game throughout much of its release, and a lack of game modes (due to a shortage of players, most likely) further made the game seem incomplete and empty. This quick shut-down further emphasizes just how hard it is to break into a genre with two established juggernauts.

Want to go give it a shot before it’s gone? Or will you focus your attention on the release of Heroes of the Storm? Or maybe you never left your MOBA of choice in the first place? Let us know in the comments.
