Jack Black is opening up about the state of his relationship with Kyle Gass amid the canceled Tenacious D tour. The teammates were at crossroads last month when Gass made light of Donald Trump’s assassination attempt. Of course, the crude joke resulted in intense backlash, causing Black to end the tour. Now the future of Tenacious D hangs in the balance and fans are left with questions.
Black finally quenched fans’ curiosities in an interview with Variety, revealing the reason behind the tour’s termination. “I love Tenacious D… We had to take a break, but I love the D. Everybody takes a break sometimes,” he explained. When asked if he and Gass have been in contact since the scandal, the Kung Fu Panda actor answered:
“Yeah, we’re friends. That hasn’t changed. These things take time sometimesโฆ And we’ll be back when it feels right.”
The incident in question happened on July 14 during the band’s stop in Sydney, Australia, a day after Trump got hit with a bullet. After being presented with a birthday cake and asked to make a birthday wish by Black, Gass declared, “Donโt miss Trump next time.”

Two days after, Black released a statement on social media, criticizing his bandmate’s remark. “I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form,” he wrote. The School of Rock actor added:
“After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”
Gass, also released an apology message, taking back his words. “The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous, and a terrible mistake,” he wrote. “What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement.” Fans of Tenacious D can remain hopeful that their favorite duo will be back sometime.
