James Gunn has spoken further about yesterday’s announcement that House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock will be the DCU’s Supergirl. The filmmaker revealed on social media that he started thinking of her because of her breakout role in the HBO fantasy series.
The actress became a sensation when she was in the first season of the HBO series as Rhaenyra Targaryen. In a time jump, she was replaced by Emma D’Arcy, leading to some disappointment from fans. Yesterday, the announcement came that her next big role would be in the DCU. She will make her debut in Superman: Legacy in 2025 and then lead in her own movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Yesterday, James Gunn confirmed the report that Milly Alcock will be Supergirl. Today, he posted on Threads that she was the first star he mentioned to his co-CEO, Peter Safran. He “had only read the comics” at the time and was watching the Game of Thrones prequel. While watching, he “thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticity” to play the superhero.
Woman of Tomorrow will be based on Tom King’s 2022 graphic novel of the same name. The adaptation plans will help differentiate her from David Corenswet’s Man of Steel. While he got to live on Earth with a loving family, she grew up surrounded by death. We will have to expect a different interpretation of the Girl of Steel, which may make the casting make more sense.
Supergirl has no director, but Ana Nogueira has been hired to pen the script. Milly Alcock will join the rest of the cast this March when Legacy begins production.
