Never let it be said that Jared Leto isn’t good at attracting attention. Between his performances in Suicide Squad and Morbius, that was never in question, but now he’s taken it to new heights – literally. Earlier today, the actor and singer made headlines by scaling the side of the Empire State Building to announce a new tour for Thirty Seconds to Mars. Video of his climb, posted on the Empire State Building’s official social media account, baffled audiences. That said, it’s clear his latest publicity stunt has paid off.

The Empire State Building broke social media earlier today by posting footage of Jared Leto climbing up the iconic landmark. Comparing him to King Kong, the video showed Leto, dressed in red and white climbing gear, monkeying his way up the building’s spire. After he reached the top, Leto announced that 30 Seconds to Mars would be embarking on the SEASONS World Tour to celebrate the band’s newest album.

In an Instagram post, Leto explained his motivation behind the stunt. Sharing that he’d always loved to climb, he stated that climbing was one of the few things that let him escape the pressures of daily life and “find a bit of freedom and equanimity.”

In a lot of ways, this album is about following your dreams and pushing yourself to do the seemingly impossible. Climbing the Empire State Building certainly falls into that category for me. As does touring the world with my brother and sharing these unforgettable concerts and experiences with you all.

When asked why he chose to climb the Empire State Building in particular, Jared Leto told The Today Show that the building was an icon for him. According to him, the building symbolized New York being the kind of place artists like him went to “make their dreams come true.” While climbing the building itself is an odd way to achieve that goal, it’s hard to say he hasn’t gotten results.

Aside from his newly-announced tour, Jared Leto’s other upcoming projects include Tron: Ares, scheduled for 2025, and Adrift, directed by Darren Aronofsky. If you were impressed by his stunt and want to see more Jared Leto, check him out in Haunted Mansion (2023).
