Jimmy Kimmel has hosted the Oscars a few times now, with relatively stable results from each outing. The late-night personality missed the mark on Sunday night when making some jokes at Robert Downey Jr.‘s expense during his opening monologue at the 2024 Oscars.
Kimmel’s Comments Felt Like an Unnecessary Low Blow
During his show opener, the audience was uncomfortable as host Jimmy Kimmel decided to take a few jabs at Robert Downey Jr., who was nominated for his role in Oppenheimer. After acknowledging Cillian Murphy, Kimmel congratulated Downey, calling the night “the highest point of Robert Downey Jr.’s career.”

Kimmel is referencing Downey’s troubled past, having battled addiction for years before getting sober in 2003. His recovery and career comeback are among the most respected in Hollywood.
Downey was a good sport as the camera panned to him, tapping his nose as he looked at the camera.
“Was that too on the nose or was that a drug motion you made?” Kimmel asked.
Downey started to look annoyed and the awkwardness was palpable as the nominee looked at the camera and motioned for Kimmel to “wrap it up” and mouthed the host should “keep it going.” He was visibly irritated as the camera continued to focus on him.
Kimmel awkwardly continued with the bit.
Look at this guy, he’s so handsome, so talented. He’s won every award there is to win. Is that an acceptance speech in your pocket or do you just have a very rectangular penis?”

He shrugged, making it clear he was no longer amused, but Kimmel persisted.

At that point, Kimmel moved on, but the vibe had definitely shifted in what was otherwise an unremarkable opening monologue.
RDJ Had the Last Laugh
Robert Downey Jr.’s night might have been a little awkward at the moment, but it certainly wasn’t ruined. Shortly thereafter, Downey was awarded Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer.
Accepting the honor, Downey thanked “my terrible childhood and The Academy. In that order.”
His lighthearted speech continued, with the 58-year-old thanking his wife, Susan Downey.
I’d like to thank my veterinarian, I meant my wife, Susan Downey. She found me, a snarling rescue pet and you loved me back to life. That’s why I’m here.”
