Celebrity memoirs always have major revelations. For John Stamos his memoir If You Would Have Told Me reveals much about Full House, like how he did not initially like Bob Saget or the Olsen twins. While he wanted off the series that made his name at first, he grew to love his colleagues and stayed on because of them. Early this year, the star revealed he had Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen temporarily removed from the cast.

He gave an ultimatum that it was “either me or them.” When replacements came in, he described the new twins as “quiet, calm, and homely as hell.” He asked for the original set of sisters back. As his feelings evolved, he wrote, “Mary-Kate is stronger in emotional scenes, Ashley scores in the comedic ones.”

The show’s lead was allegedly jealous of the author’s relationship with the twins and Dave Coulier, who played Joey Gladstone. Also revealed in the book were his feelings that the comedian was not right for the role of Danny Tanner due to his comedy background and lack of acting experience.

“Bob is the humblest egomaniac I’ve ever met, but he undercuts his narcissism by being so damn lovable. A walking contradiction, he makes up for his self-inflicted insecurity by being a self-inflicted aggrandizer. I know Bob is wickedly talented. I just don’t tell it to his face at this point. But If I want to learn anything about comedy, I need to study Bob… Bob and I tolerate each other and attempt to avoid interfering with each other’s creative processes, though it can be challenging.”

Something dramatic happened that brought the three men to become close and become like “brothers.” The three of them had sisters who were severely ill around the same time. He wrote, “The fear, fighting for family, and frustration of loss has pummeled down some of our pettiness on the set.” It put into perspective their “relationships with each other” and “relationships with the fans out there who are struggling with issues of life and death.”

Full House ran from 1987 to 1995. It had made much of the cast’s careers, like John Stamos as he delved heavily into in his memoir. Those days were filled with bickering with Bob Saget, wanting the Olsen twins fired, and begging to be taken off the show. As he got to know everyone, he changed his mind; the rest was history.

The actor eventually reprised the role for the Netflix spinoff Fuller House. It also featured new cast members and other returning stars.

John Stamos’ Memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, is now available.
