Tension brews within palace walls as Kate Middleton defies King Charles and the late Queen Elizabeth by pulling out of the royal Ascot. The Princess of Wales shocked racegoers and royal fans earlier this week when she failed to attend the Ascot races, prompting her husband, Prince William, to go solo. The initial carriage list released by Ascot officials confirmed that Kate would grace the occasion, riding in the second carriage beside her husband in the royal procession. However, less than 30 minutes after this list went public, Kensington Palace released a statement revealing that the Princess would not attend the Ascot, prompting a review of the list.
These last-minute changes have created a cloud of mystery as royal observers wonder what may have played out behind the scenes. Speculations of ongoing tensions within palace walls have since surfaced. It did not help that the excuse offered by palace representatives was vague, simply revealing that Kate Middleton was “disappointed” at having to miss the Ascot, but had to “find the right balance as she fully returns to public-facing engagements.”
Kate’s Ascot Snub Would Have Irked the Late Queen

While royal fans were left worried about the Princess’ health and wellbeing, those within royal circles felt enraged, considering her last-minute snub a slight to the crown. Speaking to The Daily Beast, one source disclosed that the Late Queen Elizabeth II would have taken offense with Kate’s absence, deeming it an affront that someone would turn down the coveted honor after previously accepting to attend. The source went on to explain that Kate never would have ditched the Ascot the way she did under Queen Elizabeth’s reign, ultimately making King Charles look weak. They divulged,
“The last-minute nature of the way it was announced makes the king look disrespected. Would she have dared miss Ascot at a moment’s notice when the queen was alive? Her late Majesty would have been not best pleased to have the great honor of a coveted place in the carriage procession rejected an hour before kickoff on slightly vague grounds.”
Another source pointed out that despite the weak explanation given for her absence, many within palace walls suspect that Kate opted out of the Ascot because of her lack of interest in racing. According to them, while something may have indeed come up to necessitate Kate’s absence, she would have made the effort had it been something she genuinely had an interest in, like Wimbledon.
What King Charles Thinks About Kate Middleton’s Last-Minute Ascot Cancelation
Despite the brewing tension surrounding Kate Middleton’s absence at Ascot, King Charles has remained understanding and supportive, refusing to feel slighted by the Wales couple. A source explained that “going through cancer himself,” the monarch understood the unpredictability of health matters, both physically and mentally. Hence, he remains “very thoughtful and considerate” in the face of the backlash Kate’s Ascot snub has garnered. This incident only highlights the disparities between Kate Middleton and King Charles when it comes to handling royal responsibilities in the face of their health struggles. The source explained,
“Charles has been very insistent that the show must go on, come hell or high water. Kate and William tackle their public duties differently, which is their privilege, for now. Charles has been very clear that he supports their decisions.”
One of Kate and William’s friends, who spoke to the outlet, commended the couple for prioritizing Kate’s health. They considered it absurd to expect Kate to parade before the public at the royal Ascot while feeling unwell. They also recounted the Princess’ dedication to her royal duties since recovering from cancer, most recently attending the Trooping the Colour on Saturday with her kids, having missed it last year amid her cancer battle.
A Shared Experience
Notably, the Princess of Wales spent the better part of 2024 under the radar as she battled an undisclosed type of cancer for months. The 43-year-old announced her diagnosis in March, revealing she would take time from her royal engagement to focus on her health and recovery. Around the same time, the palace had also announced the King’s cancer diagnosis.
Both King Charles and Kate Middleton spent months undergoing treatment, prioritizing their health over their official duties. However, the monarch soon resumed his role and has continued attending to royal engagements amid his ongoing cancer battle. Meanwhile, Kate remained under the radar, focusing on her treatment. After several rounds of chemotherapy, the Princess announced her remission and has since returned to the public eye in her full capacity as a working royal.
