Maine Activist Spreads ‘Impeach Trump’ Message In Oxford Walmart: ‘Hobby Lobby Would’ve Been Better’

The writing on the wall

A Walmart in Oxford Maine was home to a protest against Donald Trump this week, but not the kind with signs and megaphones. Instead, it appears an activist rearranged some decorative letters in a display to spell a message: “Impeach Trump.” Trump has been impeached before, of course, and that hasn’t helped remove him from office yet. While impeachment and removal may not be feasible, that’s not what matters here. The Oxford Walmart protest arguably sends a different message than it spells out: resistance will live in every corner of the nation.

Creative signs were a common form of protest long before Trump’s reelection. Though parades and public protests have been some of the most common sites, messages of resistance can crop up anywhereโ€”even on the display shelves of one of the biggest businesses in Maine.

A Reddit post about the display by u/Venustealeaf garnered over 6k upvotes and plenty of supportive comments. As one commenter put it, “Walmart is goodโ€ฆ Hobby Lobby wouldโ€™ve been better. [sic]” The suggestion is unsurprising, as both corporations’ business practices and policies have brought them under fire from activists before. Another commenter pointed out a problem with the Walmart message, saying,

I like the message but he’s already been impeached twice and we’re still not rid of him. [sic]

Thus far, Trump has proved impervious to impeachment as a means of removal. Now emboldened by conservative majorities in Congress and the Supreme Court, the president seems comfortable flouting the law at every level. Liberal resistance has also been minimal and mostly symbolic.

Meanwhile, small direct actions like rearranging decorative letters in a store display are becoming ever more important. It’s not about whether or not Trump is impeached the way the Oxford Walmart action calls for. It’s about ensuring there’s a constant display of public resistance.
