Captain America: Civil War
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information.

For comic fans who have read the Civil War storylines, the news of a major character death comes as no surprise. For those who haven’t, well, it’s a major spoiler so I’ll refrain from revealing it too early before you scroll down.

Marvel and comic book heroes in general; are always at risk of death in big and epic storylines. Comics blew up a few decades ago with major milestones like Death of Superman back in the early 1990’s. This is just one example, but it was a major cultural phenomenon when it occurred.

If you don’t know, the Captain America: Civil War characters are at odds with each other, there’s a “political disagreement” of sorts and fighting among heroes ensues. In the carnage comes a major death that changes the future of many stories to come. To avoid spoilers below is the most recent trailer of Civil War, just as one last “warning.”

Revealed earlier on Monday by Geek.com, sources close to the report have confirmed that Steve Rogers (Captain America) will die in the film. He’s a major character, so it can be surprising. For anyone who has read the comic, you know it’s true-to-form. It appears as though the Russo brothers will be sticking to the source material, killing off Cap and handing the reigns over to another suiter.

In the Civil War comics, Crossbones does the deed, ending Steve Rogers’ life in the post-war story called Fallen Son. In it, Rogers is released from jail after he turns himself in to effectively end the Civil War, and is taken out by Crossbones. The big issue, however, arises when the original content crosses the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with the X-Men one (owned by Fox). While it doesn’t seem to be something that will happen, it’s possible the path the Russo’s decide to take is completely different, which could prove to be interesting.

Captain America: Civil War is also the kick-off of Phase 3 in the MCU, and end Phase 2. So with Cap gone what does that leave for the rest of the Marvel crew? Well on the bright side we now have Spiderman in the mix, maybe his role expands as the Infinity War (also helmed by the Russo brothers) movies continue. We may see Rogers return in the future (as Geek.com points out, not many major characters stay dead forever) or we may not. I’m hoping for the latter, not because I dislike the Captain America hero or story, I just believe a big shock to the system is just what the MCU fans need.

In any case, prepare for another entertaining Marvel film to rock the superhero world this spring as it releases on May 6, 2016.

What do you think, how would you like to see the Universe continue? Are you excited for Captain America: Civil War?
