Marc Maron isn’t holding back when it comes to Bill Maher’s political stance. On the latest episode of his WTF podcast, Maron took a shot at the Real Time host for expressing support for certain aspects of Donald Trump’s second term as president.
“Are you going to be like Bill Maher?” Maron asked during a conversation with CNN’s W. Kamau Bell. “‘I’m going to agree with some of the things that Trump is doing.’ It’s like, dude, you’re a bitch.”
According to The Daily Beast, Maron kept the roast going, mocking Maher for cozying up to the MAGA crowd. “I like Kid Rock,” he sneered, imitating Maher. “And now you’re gonna blow him with a slightly disdainful look on your face? That’s who you are?”
This isn’t the first time Maron has gone after comedians who align themselves with right-wing politics. Leading up to last year’s election, he called out podcasters who give platforms to Trump and his allies, criticizing those who “joke around” with self-proclaimed white supremacists and fascists.
In a blog post at the time, Maron warned about an “American fascist movement” fueled by grievance, religious extremism, and a constant stream of propaganda. “It is shameless and proud,” he wrote. “Culturally, the combination of blatant racist fear-mongering and the anti-woke movement has delivered their message for the future—a future that marginalizes almost all voices.”
Maron also took aim at his fellow comics, arguing that stand-up has become a major driver of the far-right’s anti-woke crusade. “Whether or not they are self-serving or true believers in the new fascism is unimportant,” he wrote. “They are of the movement.”
While Maher has long positioned himself as a contrarian, Maron’s comments highlight the growing divide in comedy over free speech, politics, and just how far comedians should go in playing to the right. Maher hasn’t responded to the criticism yet, but knowing him, he probably will.
