ICE agents are now spread across the United States, targeting countless immigrants, both legal and undocumented. While many people might assume that these actions are focused only on adults, the reality is far more alarming. These agents have shown no restraint, deporting not just parents but also teenagers and even children. One of the most recent targets was a high school student from Blair High School in Maryland.

When students at the school found out that ICE had deported one of their own, they refused to stay silent. Moved by what had happened, they organized a large walkout and protest in response to the agency’s actions. Among the organizers was Kyara Romero Lira. The 17-year-old is an active student, contributing to the school’s newspaper and leading a club called Students for Asylum and Immigration Reform.

Romero Lira said she was shocked to learn that someone who had once shared the same hallways and classrooms was now being deported by ICE. Even though she had been aware of the rise in deportations under the Trump administration, this felt different. It felt personal. The Maryland student believed that the actions of ICE posed a real threat that everyone in the school community needed to take seriously. In Montgomery County Public Schools, where over a quarter of the students are Hispanic, the situation hit even closer to home.

She said it was highly likely that more students could be next. Many of them are afraid to speak out, scared that someone might report them to ICE or other immigration authorities. The presence of ICE has created a climate of fear, making it difficult for students to feel safe, even within their own school. While there are students who are willing to raise their voices, others have been silenced by the constant anxiety that speaking up might make them a target. One of Romero Lira’s close friends had planned to speak during the protest, but changed his mind. He told her he no longer felt safe. She said it broke her heart to see someone too scared to speak up for what they believed in.

Despite all of this, Romero Lira expressed her appreciation for the teachers and school administrators who supported the protest and helped make sure it stayed safe. Montgomery County Public Schools also backed the students’ right to peacefully assemble, stating that the walkout was permitted as long as it followed school regulations.

Many internet users praised the students for their decision to stand up against ICE and what they described as the tyrannical policies of the Trump administration. One Redditor commented, “These teenagers have more morals and backbone than any adult ICE agent has in their pinky toe. I hope the losers who snatch and deport children never experience a moment of internal or external peace for the rest of their lives.”
