Massachusetts Man Loses Friend After She Deems His Wedding Gift Unacceptable, ‘Well, Don’t Be Cheap’

What a spoiled baby

Nothing is more exciting than getting to share a loved one’s big wedding day with them. Being a friend to the bride or groom can heighten the excitement! One man from Massachusetts shared the story of his best friend’s wedding on Reddit’s r/weddingshaming and detailed how things went from great to dreadful in only a matter of days. He claims that the reason for their friendship coming to an end is due to his wedding gift.

OP explained that, from the start, he was investing a lot of money he didn’t have into being there for his best friend. He stated, “I was excited to attend, but had to purchase a new suit, transportation and pay for a hotel (3 nights.)” Not to mention he was saddled with a $1900 dental bill at the same time. Money was pretty tight. However, being best friends with the bride, he still wanted to attend regardless.

Friendship ruined over "cheap" wedding gift

The first indication his friend was morphing into a Bridezilla was booking an affordable hotel room. He said, “She was not happy about this, but I didn’t understand why I had to be at this specific one.” The bride sent him a rude text message about it. However, OP’s choice of wedding present was about to get more tense. OP wasn’t even aware of the lodgings they chose!

Between the trip and the expensive dental bill, OP still wanted to get the bride a gift. He said, “I only gave $80 to their honeymoon fund as a gift. Looking back, I admit I could have splurged for more, but I don’t drink, was without a date, and figured that everything I did to attend this wedding would all be enough for her.” Not only is that a fine wedding gift, I’d be more worried about my best friend being there in the first place.

As time passed, OP discovered that the bride was upset about his present. He casually mentioned to his best friend one day that he had another wedding to attend. She responded, “Well, don’t be cheap and give them only $80.” His heart dropped from guilt. He concluded by saying, “I just can’t believe that her entire memory of me at her wedding was being ‘cheap.’”

Commenters on OP’s post agreed that the bride’s actions gave total ‘yikes’ vibes. In a comment that got thousands of reactions, an individual stated, “Honestly, if you’d done all that for my wedding, I wouldn’t expect a penny for a gift.” Another agreed with, “It’s beyond tacky to shame someone for the size of their gift, no matter what they did to get to your wedding.”

Many people feel wrongfully entitled to lavish displays just because it’s their wedding. As one person stated on OP’s post, “She was incredibly selfish. I wouldn’t have expected any gift for a destination wedding: your presence was your gift.”

That’s how it should be, but it doesn’t always work out that way. We like to think the best of people until they sometimes show us otherwise. In these situations, sometimes it’s best to walk away.
