It’s not just patients who feel the frustration of missing out on life-saving medications due to insurance company’s incompetence. Physicians also feel the pressure, wishing they could do more for their patients. An endocrinologist in Michigan who typically works with people who have diabetes felt horror when she struggled to get results for a recent patient. The insurance company denied her medication, prompting this hardworking doctor to jump into action and help.
Sally (@sallyseeley on TikTok) stated on video, “Well, today health insurance companies infringed on my patients and practice of medicine.” She said that the health insurance company for a female patient denied her Lantus medication for diabetes. It was her first time taking insulin, and the insurance company wanted to instead approve her for an alternative named Semglee. Unfortunately, Semglee is no longer available. No pharmacy carries it.
Sally jumped into action and told the patient’s insurance company that she couldn’t receive Semglee due to the discontinuation. However, the insurance company continued to deny the claim for Lantus. Sally wrote the patient a “letter of medical necessity” so that she could receive her medication. To Sally, this was just another day in the life of a doctor fighting with the big-name health insurance companies for results.
It’s tiresome for those who rely on medication to deal with health insurance companies. At any given time, they could decide not to approve a medication, treatment, or visit with a specialist. This can completely uproot life as you know it. Commenters agreed that what we face in America is ridiculous. One commenter said, “Health insurance in the USA is a scam. We are paying CEOs and board members millions of dollars to deny claims so they can keep money in their pockets.” Another commenter explained, “Insurance companies NEED to be stopped from practicing medicine without a license. If a doctor says a patient needs something it’s not up to the insurance to make their own medical determination of need that supersedes the medical providers.”
The unfortunate reality is that we have no choice in America but to wait around for health insurance companies. In your life, you’ve probably received a denial when your insurance didn’t have your best interests in mind. Why do they keep getting away with evil?
