Monster Hunter Wilds Gets Review Bombed on Steam Over Optimization: ‘Runs Even Worse Than Beta’

The ol’ barrel bomb technique on a sleeping monster

Monster Hunter Wilds is finally out now and already, it’s making waves, because the PC gamer community appears to be split on the game. In fact, Monster Hunter Wilds is being review bombed at the moment, with more than half of its reviewers on Steam rating the game negatively based on its poor PC performance and other issues.

Make no mistake, however, plenty of people have bought Monster Hunter Wilds already. The game currently sits at nearly 1 million peak concurrent players and the weekend hasn’t even officially started yet. It’s just that a small fraction of those 987,000 players appear to be waging a Steam review bombing tug-of-war.

At the time of writing, there are currently 4,300+ reviews for Monster Hunter Wilds and it’s sitting at a “Mixed” review score on Steam, only 45 percent of the reviews are positive. Majority of those who reviewed the game are dissatisfied right away.

Negative Reviewers Cite Poor Optimization & Worse Performance than Beta

As for why the Monster Hunter Wilds is being review bombed this early on, some of the most liked or tagged as “helpful” negative reviews blame the game’s performance on their hardware. Some of the negative reviews even claim they have high-end hardware, such as an RTX 4070 or RTX 3080, but the game still won’t run at acceptable framerates.

Here’s one of the most awarded negative reviews for the game on Steam:

“Absolutely atrocious performance for how the game looks. Runs even worse than the beta. For reference, I could run the beta at a comfortable 60-70 FPS on High, usually higher than that. Now I’m running at less than 50 on Medium with noticeable dips.

The game does not look nearly good enough to warrant this performance. Everything is covered in a grimy texture with assets that look like you straight took them out of a PS3 game. If I can run KCD2 and Cyberpunk on maxed out settings comfortably, then there is no reason this game should be running like this.

Embarrassing. Wait for a sale and/or optimization updates. I’ve played games on my Deck that look better than this. When I was [a] kid I couldn’t believe how good MHFU looked on my PSP, an entire world in my hands. And now they release a game like this.

It saddens me the mediocrity that Capcom has fallen into. But what do I know, maybe I’m just a little silly billy and my 4070 toaster is just outdated at this point. Guess I’ll go back to playing better looking games on ultra,” based on Steam user Meadow’s experience.

Other negative reviews complain about character edit vouchers, which supposedly shouldn’t exist in the game, similar to how Capcom also implemented similar vouchers to Dragon’s Dogma 2 back in 2024.

Other negative reviews are more level-headed and claim that the game is amazing, it’s just that the optimization could use more work. Apparently, Monster Hunter World also experienced similar performance issues at launch back in 2018.

A Consistent Launch Reaction for Big Capcom RPGs?

It’s worth noting that last year, Capcom also launched the aforementioned Dragon’s Dogma 2 and likewise, it was also review-bombed with the rating plunging as low as “Mostly Negative” on Steam. However, the complaints back then had less to do with performance and more to do with microtransactions on a single-player game.

With Monster Hunter Wilds, however, it appears that there’s a combination of optimization complaints and microtransaction woes from disgruntled PC players. In hindsight, most players haven’t reviewed the game yet, of course.

So there’s still a chance that the majority could drown out the review bombers over the weekend once players have accumulated enough gameplay time to leave knowledgeable reviews.
