Meghan Markle may have cut ties with the UK, but she’s very much affiliated with the country to this day, through her marriage to Prince Harry, being the mother of his kids, and her status as the Duchess of Sussex. Since leaving the UK for a life in the United States with her husband and kids, the Suits alum has made clear her desire to detach herself from the country, targeting the monarchial structure in documentaries and interviews while keeping her kids from identifying with their UK familial link.
Yet, the duchess keeps asserting her ties to the country she fled, with subtle references to royal traditions, nods to Harry’s late mom, and her firm hold on the Sussex title. The star established this connection on Sunday, with a special social media post celebrating UK Mother’s Day, igniting the wrath of the Meghan Markle hate train. She took to Instagram on Sunday to share a photo of a lemon pie, topped with edible flowers and lemon slices.
Meghan Markle’s UK Mother’s Day Photo Sparks Outrage
The photo featured the creamy pie nestled on a rustic platter, with her fingers holding it firmly. A tiny finger, most likely belonging to one of her kids, Archie or Lilibeth, was visible in the shot, right next to hers, giving the photo a delicate touch. Via caption, the icon acknowledged that the beautifully-styled pastry was a family tradition she observes with her husband and children to mark the UK’s Mother’s Day despite living in the US. She wrote,
“Our family tradition, Mothering Sunday in the UK.”
The mere mention of the UK in her post sparked the wrath of critics, who turned to social media to slam the mom of two. Many criticised Meghan Markle for attempting to establish a connection to the UK, a country whose monarchy she’s spent years condemning, making Mother’s Day her flimsy excuse. They described the exiled royal as “pretentious,” “tone-deaf,” and “artificial,” while admonishing her to drop the facade. One critic wrote,
“How weird and self-centered is Markle that she chooses Mother;s Day of all UK holidays to post. LOL, Harry and Meghan’s PR machine likes to comment that Markle is living her life in California carefree, but here she is literally proving us the opposite. Everyone here in California celebrates Mother’s Day in May lol.”
“Another shot,
“She thought she would be Hollywood royalty and did not need the UK or the royals since she was the one who transformed a 1000-year-old institution (sarcasm). Now she would do anything to be back in the royal fold.”
One critic described Meghan as “a well of emptiness,” pointing out how the actress-turned-royal had no familiar ties or thriving relationship with her family members, save for her mom Doria Ragland. The critic suggested she only kept her mom around to enable her to play the race card. Another called out the 43-year-old for inventing traditions and associating with the royal life after spending her short time with the royal family, opposing those traditions in the name of wokeness. A different comment read,
“Word. All we have heard for years is how she had to flee and how horrible the UK was, and her sacrifices and never sharing her children with a country that would call them the N-word. So now she is observing Mothering Sunday as a tradition ?? Please God make it make sense.”
Some enraged netizens cited instances where Meghan Markle previously defied royal family traditions, and portrayed them as “demeaning” or “outdated.” Yet, after fleeing the UK over these same traditions and equating the royals’ attempt to have her observe the centuries-old tradition to “being treated poorly,” she’s seemingly trying obsessively “to connect herself with the UK,” they claimed.
Markle Ditched the UK Completely Despite Claims

Meghan Markle’s post celebrating UK Mother’s Day comes amid claims the duchess had no intentions of returning to the UK again. In his book, End Game, author Omid Scobie, often dubbed Markle’s mouthpiece, claimed the 43-year-old has vowed never to set foot in England again, as she never “truly felt at home there.” Her resolve, he revealed, stems from the hardships the duchess allegedly faced during her stint as a working royal.
While her decision could potentially restrict her children’s contact with their home country, there’s no severing those ties completely, as her husband, and by extension, his kids would forever remain UK citizens with a Dukedom in the heart of England. Given these conditions, it’d be slighting if Markle continuously asserts herself as the Duchess of Sussex, yet fails to acknowledge revered holidays celebrated in the country.
