Mortal Kombat 1 Story Expansion 2 Getting Canceled Is Totally Reasonable

For the greater good

It’s the word of the day that the Mortal Kombat 1 story expansion 2 is canceled due to the Khaos Reigns‘ poor sales. The year 3 DLCs and Kombat Pack 3 are also canceled for Mortal Kombat 1, leaving fans empty-handed after the Kombat Pack 2 characters are all released in 2025. But is this really a thing to be worried about? Or should we look at the bright side of this circumstance? I’d say I like this situation, really.

The reason I’m saying this is exactly the Khaos Reigns expansion. Not the sales, that’s not my or other fans’ business. It’s about the quality of that DLC and how much lower it was compared to MK11‘s Aftermath glory. In other words, Khaos Reigns failed to show us a catching story of Titan Havik and his power, while burning a plethora of Mortal Kombat‘s iconic tales that I was hoping to see in the future.

For instance, the Komidogu. Why? Why would they use these artifacts for literally nothing in the game as they give Titan Havik nearly zero power boost after he brags about all the “anarchy” and “chaos” he’ll bring upon us? These could be used for the glorious return of Dragon King Onaga, who’s been ignored by the developers for more than 15 years now.

Instead, we’ve got yet another multiverse story where someone appears from a portal and wants to destroy the world; yay. I can’t be happy about this story writing because it’s overshadowing the conflicts and the growing narrative of the main timeline that I enjoy watching. Imagine you’re watching a nice TV show and your sibling changes the channel; not nice.

So in that sense, if NetherRealm Studios has canceled the year 3 story expansion 2 and the Kombat Pack 3 DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 so that they can focus on their upcoming titles, I respect that. This is a very tough decision, but it’s worth the shot. I’d definitely like to see a fully mastered Mortal Kombat 2 in the upcoming years rather than another soft DLC.

Amir is an absolute Call of Duty nerd, preferring shooter games more than everything. However, he does like to do uppercuts in Mortal Kombat and feel the NOS going through the engines in Need For Speed games.
