Comedian Amber Ruffin is throwing jabs at the White House Correspondent Association after they canceled her. On Saturday, the association fired the comedian from headlining their annual fundraising dinner, claiming that the focus was not on the politics of division. Now, the Nebraska native has spoken about the issue, hitting the association with sarcastic responses.ย
Ruffin made a surprise appearance on Tuesdayโs episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, where she mocked the reason behind her cancellation. Meyers joked about a burglary in a bodega, and midway through his dialogue, Ruffin came on screen, interrupting. The 46-year-old referred to the statement from WHCA.
โSee Seth, the problem is thatโs divisive. Take it from me. If thereโs one thing Iโve learned from this weekend is that you have to be fair to both sides,โ she said. The host tried to counter her and broke down what the robber did.
However, for every offense Meyers mentioned, the Nebraska playwright gave a witty defense, trolling the Trump administration. When Meyers said, โThereโs an innocent bodega owner, and thereโs a burglar,โ his guest replied, quoting a famous line from Trump. โOr hear me out; there are very fine people on both sides.โ
When the TV anchor declared the robber burnt the ATM, Ruffin replied that he fought inflation. Soon, Meyers objected, saying that bad things should be called out. He explained, โAmber, when people are objectively terrible, we should be able to point it out on television.โ
Ruffin responded that she had the same belief, but it was changed after the past Friday. She explained, โToday is Monday, and Mondayโs Amber Ruffin knows that when bad people do bad things, you have to treat them fairly and respectfully.โ
She continued the sarcasm, referencing a musical show: “When you watch the sound of Music, you have to root for the singing children and the other people.โ โYou mean the Nazis?โ the showโs anchor interrupted, and Ruffin retorted, “Calling them that is so one-sided.โ
What Led To Amber Ruffin’s Cancellation?
Further into the conversation, Meyers noted that the reason for free media was to have things reported as they happened. Ruffin, however, argued with the host’s opinion, saying:
“I thought when people take away your rights, erase your history, and deport your friends, youโre supposed to call them out, but I was wrong. Glad to find that out now, because if they had let me give that speech, ooh baby… I would have been so terrifically mean.โ
The author ended her joke by saying she would return her dress. Although the tags had come off, the actress hinted she would lie about it. When Meyers pointed out that was lying, Ruffin countered, โYou canโt say that. Thatโs journalism.โ
Amber Ruffin was canceled after referring to people of the Trump administration as a โbunch of murderersโ last week. Initially, when she was announced as the host, WHCA president Eugene Daniels said the comedian would roast โthe most powerful people on all sides of the aisle and the journalists who cover them.โ
However, things changed after she appeared on The Daily Beast Podcast on Thursday. Ruffin during her appearance, argued that playing both sides only made the Trump administration “feel like human beings, but they shouldnโt get to feel that way because theyโre not.”
News of Ruffinโs cancellation sparked an outrage online. โCancel culture has taken over the White House smh Free speech haters!โ critiqued a user.
