Makers of the snowy post-apocalyptic RTS Frostpunk, 11bit Studios have revealed the biggest expansion to the game so far.

The upcoming DLC, The Last Autumn, is a story prequel to the plot of the base-building game and will change the frostbitten landscape players have become familiar with. That landscape provides not just the backdrop in Frostpunk but also directly affects gameplay. Units will die if left exposed to the freezing environment for too long, for example.

The new DLC will depict a turning point in the Frostpunk universe, and shed light on the events of the story that happen before the apocalyptic winter strikes. Instead of the stark, deadly, snow of the main game, the world of The Last Autumn is full of life and energy. Players will control civilization’s last attempts to survive the imminent climate collapse and build a heat generator in an effort to save their society. Players will fight an uneven battle against winter as it slowly takes over the British Empire and threatens its collapse. Mechanically, The Last Autumn brings new buildings, technologies, and Books of Laws to players, which will lead to further social issues and shape the Frostpunk society.

Frostpunk Lead Designer, Kuba Stokalski, had this to say about the upcoming DLC:

“We’re really excited to show our latest work to the community. The Last Autumn will debut a month later than originally planned, but we firmly believe that it will be worth the wait since it’s one of the most amazing things we did with Frostpunk so far. And the story doesn’t end here. The third DLC is coming, so 2020 will be a big year for Frostpunk.

The Last Autumn will be available on January 21st and is included in the Frostpunk Season Pass, which was released in August for PCs. The Last Autumn, like all previous expansions to Frostbunk, will arrive on consoles at a later date. Along with the release of the new DLC, Frostpunk is having its biggest sale to date with a 60% discount on Steam.
