The multiplayer component of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was honored with a new trailer during Sony’s press conference at Paris Games Week. The trailer, while not showing a lot of actual gameplay, was actually pretty revealing. In it, we can clearly see the variety of weapons that will be available in the game, as well as a look at the different environments we’ll be playing in. One thing that I found particularly interesting was the verticality of it. Players will have access to the grappling hook, so should be able to scale some environments to get around and give the game many more planes of play. Also of note is the ability to summon sidekicks, such as the medic and sniper present in the video, and the totems used to gain supernatural abilities like the one at the end of the trailer.

Uncharted 4 won’t, however, offer dedicated servers, and will instead run on peer-to-peer connections, reported VG247. “We’ll still have a host, it’s still peer-to-peer,” said Robert Cogburn, the game’s lead multiplayer designer. Neither of the last two Uncharted games, the only two with multiplayer modes, had dedicated servers, though, so this is nothing new for the series. The only real disadvantage to multiplayer games not having dedicated servers is that all players are at the mercy of the host player’s internet connection. With dedicated hosting being so expensive for developers and publishers, you see a lot of multiplayer games ran like this, outside of larger companies, like EA and their Battlefield series.

“Microtransactions will be available at launch, but we’ll have no gameplay items that will be gated through microtransactions,” Cogburn told GameSpot, which is to say that players can naturally unlock all items in the game by grinding or can choose to take the loser’s way out and pay for access. Uncharted 4 includes an in-game currency as well, that you earn as you play and can spend to unlock said items.

Naughty Dog will run a beta test from Dec. 4-13. At the time of writing, only players who purchased Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection will have access to it, but we will keep you posted if word of an open beta reaches our ears. Otherwise, Uncharted 4: A Thiefs End will launch on March 18, 2015, exclusively on the PlayStation 4 system.
