I’ve read some pretty wild scams over the last few years. Unfortunately, my grandfather used to be the victim of various ones concerning Amazon delivery updates, road toll suspensions, and more. However, I don’t think I’ve ever encountered one as meticulously thought-out as the one posted below.

UPDATE: I Exposed a Multi-Million Dollar NYC Jewelry Scam and Got Arrested for Kidnapping the Scammer. AMA

A man in New York is trying to ensure he and his family are appropriately defended after the District Attorney sided with a scammer in a fake robbery, kidnapping, and beating. Of course, the DA realized he was in the wrong, but all that means is that he’s now attempting to silence the man by all means necessary. What a time to be alive.

Jacob Acital, the owner of 5 Towns Jewelry Buyer, had an interesting experience with a man who turned a scam into the nightmare of the century. A scammer from a criminal gang based in New York City’s Diamond District had come to Acital’s home office and attempted to sell a counterfeit Cartier bracelet. When confronted, the man left the bracelet, left the property, and proceeded to call the police and state that Acital and his family kidnapped him, stole his bracelet, and then beat him with baseball bats.

Yeah, that all sounds like quite a stretch. However, despite surveillance footage of everything that occurred, Avital and his two brothers were arrested and charged with 12 felonies. Two of these felonies included kidnapping and first-degree robbery. After reviewing the evidence because of Jacob’s advocacy for acknowledgment that he was scammed, the DA offered non-criminal violations instead of jail time.

Fortunately, the family declined and instead sought full dismissal of the charges, especially since the situation was handled unfairly. However, the DA has since decided to threaten indictment on the grounds of kidnapping should the family not accept the deal.

“I’m determined to expose this massive jewelry scam, clear our names, and highlight law enforcementโ€™s refusal to prosecute the real criminals. I protest daily at the Nassau County Courthouse with a sign–only person to do this in front of a felony courthouse.”

Avital has been protesting outside the Nassau County Courthouse for days to raise awareness. The Reddit post above will likely reach the DA, who might speak out to clarify their end of things.

Unfortunately, this incident underscores the many challenges faced by those less wary of scams. If something like this had happened to my grandfather, I would have questioned the responses of law enforcement and the legal system as a whole.
