The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will hit shelves in the Holiday season of this year. Nintendo, however, seems committed to the Nintendo Switch going forward.

During a Q&A with investors (translated by VGC), Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated:

“We will explain the specific figures for the next fiscal year in our next fiscal year announcement, but I think there will certainly be a change in the environment as new products of our competitors appear,”

“We do not believe that the business trends of other companies will have a significant impact on our business.”

Later, in the same VGC report that translated the Q&A, it was noted that an NPD survey indicated that over 40% of US gamers also have a PS4 or Xbox One. This suggests that its competitors have not impacted the Switch and this will likely remain the case when those next-gen systems roll around.

The Life Cycle of the Nintendo Switch

Furukawa is confident about Nintendo’s hybrid console, and it’s hard not to share some of that same confidence. Since its debut in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has been a massive success from both a financial and critical viewpoint. Why has everyone loved this console so much? Well, we can talk about the high-quality titles that have released on the system. Games such as Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. Or we can discuss the incredible ability to take the Nintendo console from your house and go anywhere with it. And luckily for fans of the Switch, it won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. In the same Q&A, Furukawa said that the Switch is just in the middle of its life cycle:

“We believe that the Nintendo Switch business is now in its fourth year and is just in the middle of its life cycle. Rather than just the next year, I think about things in terms of what to do the following year and the year after that.”

What are your thoughts on Furukawa’s comments? Is it a smart move to commit to the Switch going forward? Let us know in the comments below!
