As players finish their playthroughs of FFVII Remake and take to Twitter to fight over the ending, the game’s director and producer have revealed some plans for the future installments in the series.

Future installments of FFVII Remake will cover smaller parts of the story and be more detailed than the first game so that they can be produced in less time and be released sooner. This news comes from a translation of the back cover quotes from FFVII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura and producer Yoshinori Kitase. The quoted text was provided for the recently released in Japan Final Fantasy VII Remake Ultimania art book and translated on Twitter:

Nomura: (How about the next part?) Depends on how many parts the overall story will be. If we divide the story into large parts, it'll take longer to make. If we divide it into more detailed smaller sections, then developing it will be faster. I hope to release the next one ASAP.

The ending for FFVII Remake has been more than a little divisive among the gaming community. Discussion of this disagreement may be considered a spoiler by some, so those still avoiding spoilers should stop reading here. The ending to FFVII Remake opens up the option for fundamental changes to the plot for future entries in the Remake series. There are essentially three sides to the argument going on over this decision: those who think the ending is a bold, subversive choice, those who think the story should hold more tightly to the source material, and those who find the ending confusing.

The decision to produce future entries of the series as soon as possible should please two sides of this argument. Players who were confused will be happy to not need to wait too long to have their questions answered in future installments. Those who enjoyed the ending’s choice to break away from the past will be interested to see what changes in future installments. The only real solace for those who wanted a more faithful adaptation is that there is a pretty solid fan mod of the original FFVII with higher resolution textures in production on PC.

No matter what side of the debate about the ending you’re on, you have to admit that the music in the VR battles slaps. Hopefully, we get more of that in the sequels.
