Jordan Peele is off to a good start with his sci-fi horror film Nope as Thursday previews have grossed $6.4 million domestic. It is expected to land on top of the domestic box office, but predictions vary that its weekend will be between $45 and $60 million total, with the consensus leaning on the higher end due to this start.

Comparatively, the Thursday previews for Nope are greater than Get Out but fall short of what Us scored. Get Out grossed on its Thursday opening with $18 million, with Us grossing $7.4 million. The latest film from the comedy-turned-horror filmmaker is his most expensive and ambitious, with a $68 million budget, much greater than Get Out‘s $4.5 million and the $20 million it took to make Us. His horror debut with Get Out grossed $255.4 million worldwide, with Us grossing $255.1 million worldwide.

The release of a film like Nope looks to Thursday previews as a sign of its opening weekend performance. Get Out ended its opening weekend with $33.4 million, and Us brought in $71.1 million during its first weekend.

Nope Thursday previews deliver strong domestic box office numbers

Since Get Out, Peele has made a name for himself as one of the strongest modern horror directors. From comedy like Key & Peele to the underworld of all things spooky, he made his stamp with a mix of scares, comedy, and thoughtful commentary. As people saw with the Thursday previews, Nope continues that trend to deliver nightmares, release tension with humor, and give something to think about when credits roll.

The latest film from the director follows the relationship between a brother, OJ (Daniel Kaluuya), and his sister Emerald (Keke Palmer). The two own the only Black-owned ranch horse trainers and have their business disrupted when something in the sky is observing them.

Nope is out now. It is written and directed by Peele. The film stars Kaluuya, Palmer, Brandon Perea (The OA), Wrenn Schmidt (For All Man Kind), and Keith David.
