Sometimes, people forget they were once a child and forget what it feels like to be a teenager. Late nights out with friends, various commitments, and events with family can take up a lot of their time. Unfortunately, people still continue to make comments about teenagers being “lazy” and “sleeping all the time” even though it’s what they need in their lives on their way to adulthood. Parents often forget teenagers are still growing. One North Carolina mother understands her teenager and so she’s sharing what daily life looks like for her teen during the summer months.
Vidya (@queencitytrends) shared her video on social media showing a day in the life of her teenage daughter during the summer. She starts filming her daughter sleeping at 8 AM and then every hour after, shows she’s still asleep in her bed until 1 PM. Her daughter is in a new sleeping position almost every time she goes to check in on her. When she walks in at 1:15 p.m., you see her daughter finally emerging from her deep rest, an irritated look on her face and her arms crossed in front of her. She captioned the video, “Yes, we let our kids sleep in for as long as they want in the summer.”
Who expects their children to wake up at sunrise hours during the summer like they do during the school year? What purpose would there be to that if they aren’t expected to make it to an early morning job? Well, for some reason, some parents take issue with and think it’s a teenager being “lazy.”
If they’re meeting their sports and other extracurricular commitments, doing expected chores, and getting to their job on time if they work, who cares? One commenter on Vidya’s video explained it perfectly: “I never understood why people get mad for teens sleeping tbh. This is genuinely the only breaks they’ll ever get in their lives.”
Others pointed out how healthy it is for our children to get lots of extra sleep. One commenter pointed out, “Studies show teens need the most sleep!! They’re growing!!” Another shared her own experience, “Oh to be a teen during summer break again.”
A teacher even chimed in with, “I’m a teacher and I’m sleeping in till noon every day that I can this summer! No shame!” It seems like the general consensus is we all like our sleep, so leave teenagers to their own devices on this one. Dad and mom could use the extra sleep, too!
