An Ohio teenager preparing to celebrate her milestone 18th birthday says what was supposed to be a meaningful occasion has instead left her feeling unseen by her very own family. The teen reveals she was excited about her “golden birthday” as she turns 18 on the 18th, but says things turned sour after she realized her birthday was going to be hijacked by her loved ones. Now she wants to know if she’s in the wrong for feeling disappointed.
The young Ohio girl explained via Reddit that she is preparing to move to Florida to attend college and was thrilled when her mother planned to give her a “gift a day” leading up to her birthday. For her big day, a trip to Florida was planned. However, she grew upset when she realized that the trip centered more around visiting her older sister’s college than doing what she really wanted to do.
The incoming college student admitted that she was hoping for some visit time with her long-distance best friend, who only lives a few hours from where she’ll be going to school in the fall. However, instead of spending a few days with her bestie, her mom only made time for the friends to have a quick lunch together.
The teenager went on to say that her birthdays have never felt special, mostly because her sister always finds a way to make them about her. She then went on to cite a specific birthday when they tried to do something fun, but her older sister made everyone uncomfortable by complaining the entire time.
Ohio Teen Pours Her Heart Out After Disappointed Golden Birthday
In addition to not being able to spend the time with her best friend that she wanted, the Reddit user also admitted that the jewelry gifts she was given were not her style and irritated her skin, proving that her family may not know her very well. She says she knows her mom is trying, but she feels like she’s being ignored on what was supposed to be a trip to celebrate her golden birthday.
“I really don’t want to sound ungrateful or spoiled. I know there are people who don’t get anything for their birthdays. But this year was supposed to be special,” the teen confessed.
In the comments section, people shared their opinions on the situation. Many were very nice and helpful, giving the teen advice on how to handle the dilemma.
“Your mom should prioritize your wishes and make your birthday about you, not your sister. And as for the fake gold jewelry, just politely explain that it’s not your style and you would appreciate real gold jewelry instead. It’s your special day, you deserve to be happy with the gifts you receive,” one person stated.
“This honestly makes my heart ache for you. I’m so sorry that this is happening to you honestly if they can’t take the time to realize that you are your own person and not your sister,” another wrote.
It seems that this Ohio teen may have to spend her golden birthday having an awkward conversation with her family or catering to their needs. Either way, it seems unfair and will likely be one birthday that she’ll never forget.
