Oklahoma Woman Discovers She’ll Be Forced to Cook For Wedding, “I Didn’t Want to Make a Scene, So I Went Along With It”

Being the bride doesn’t give you the right to be rude

When you receive an invite to a wedding, it’s to celebrate the connection of two people. So, you hire caterers and cooks to help keep people fed. It’s a party, after all. What would you do if you were invited to a wedding, only to find out that you’re being forced to cook? Oh, and you weren’t notified until the day before. This is what happened to one woman in Oklahoma, and it’s safe to say she wasn’t too happy about it.

A 21-year-old OP posed her story on Reddit’s “Am I the A*e” subreddit. She explained she and her girlfriend drove five hours to attend a wedding for her girlfriend’s older sister. OP and her girlfriend were shocked to find that they were needed for some intense before-wedding preparation that included cooking most of the wedding’s banquet.

AITA for ignoring my girlfriend after I had to help at her sisters wedding?

She explained, “We arrived a day early to help with preparations,” saying she was totally okay with assisting with setup. However, OP felt as if they were being asked too much and being taken advantage of. She said they had to “drive an hour and a half to the nearest Walmart for groceries,” and asked to assist in making a corn salad. She went on to say, “They didn’t really ask; it felt more like I was being told what to do.”

On the day of the wedding, OP was woken up at 6 a.m. by the bride, who tasked them with tons of dishes. She cooked from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and only had an hour to get themselves prepared for the wedding. OP claims that she didn’t want to “make a scene, so I went along with it.” After the ceremony, OP was rushed back into the kitchen. Now it was time to prepare post-wedding dinner as quickly as possible.

When OP and her girlfriend finally had a chance to talk about it, she said, “She assured me we were almost done and we could finish quicker if we all helped.” However, the day pretty much ended in misery as it was rushed, and she felt as if she had missed out. She concluded by saying, “I feel mistreated and miserable; I thought I was a guest, not a worker.”

Reddit commenters believe that OP was, indeed, mistreated throughout the entirety of the wedding in the most disrespectful way. One person said, “Anyone would feel used and upset” and that she was probably only invited to the wedding to be “free labor.”

Another said, “Those expectations should have been made clear from the beginning so you’d have a choice. Since they weren’t, you were duped.”

Others still pointed out that OP’s girlfriend shouldn’t have allowed her family to treat her so poorly. Or, at the very least, stick up for herself.

Far too many people get a case of the before-wedding jitters and forget the world doesn’t revolve around just them. Family is a big part of a wedding, and it pays to remember their existence and their role in your life.
