Parents in Ohio Want To Kick Their Soon to be Adult Child Out of the House For Not Taking Out the Trash: ‘Sorry This Is Happening to You’

Many adults do not survive on the minimum wage

We must admit that all over the world, there are many bad parents. An incredible number of people who only want to have children for the sake of having them. Still others are horrible parents who do not deserve to have children for any reason because of the terrible treatment they subject their children to, almost as if they were enemies. So it is complicated to understand how a parent, who supposedly is concerned about the welfare of their children, anxiously waits for them to come of age to kick them out of the family home. For example, in this Reddit post, some Ohio parents, after a silly argument, threatened their child with kicking them out for their 18th birthday.

My parents just told me they are kicking me out in 2 weeks

Reddit user Roleeo sought help and guidance on r/legaladvice, where they distressingly shared how their parents have practically set a timer for them to leave home. According to OP, they were already aware that their parents wanted them to leave home at 18. But it was not until the end of their senior year. However, recently, the father lost his temper when OP forgot to take out the garbage. And so, he threatened to make them leave home once they turned 18. So OP would still be a year away from finishing high school.

This in itself is a problematic situation, as the OP only has a part-time minimum-wage job with little savings. The OP was already worried about finishing high school and being homeless. Yet, they felt even more hurt because their father was so excited about not having to share his house anymore. So, he decided to seek advice to determine their options at this point.

In Ohio, you can’t be kicked out without 30-day notice, and not unless you are fully emancipated. And to fully emancipated you have to be either (a) 18, or (b) have withdrawn or graduated high school, whichever comes last. Tell them the law doesn’t allow them to do what they are planning.

At the very least, now you know what to prepare for when you graduate HS. Sorry this is happening to you.

In general, many agreed that in Ohio, parents cannot kick out their children as minors, let alone high school graduates. If the children are already 18 years old and finishing their senior year, they must still provide a 30-day notice to leave the house. As far as the OP is concerned, they could have more time to prepare before leaving. Yet, we hope that this whole problem was just an exaggerated response from the father, and that they can fix it.
