One of 2023’s biggest movies has an exclusive hub for fans to watch at home. Peacock just signed a deal to secure Oppenheimer on its streaming service, along with other Christopher Nolan movies. The Cillian Murphy-led biopic will be available on February 16. The other licensed films from the director to come in the future will include Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Dunkirk, Inception, and Memento on February 1.
The reason for Peacock to grab Oppenheimer is tied to it being distributed and produced by Universal Pictures. Both the streamer and movie studio are owned by NBCUniversal.
Oppenheimer and More Christopher Nolan Movies Moving to Peacock After Streaming Licenses Were Signed
Oppenheimer, like Barbie, which was released on the same day, became one of the biggest theatrical phenomenons in 2023. It grossed $952 million worldwide. Like other Nolan movies, it touted IMAX as the ultimate experience to watch the biopic. The marketing for the format worked out as it broke multiple records, including the biggest opening weekend for IMAX.
Peacock drops the Oppenheimer bomb seven months after its historic theatrical run. The film dropped on VOD in November. Unlike its pink and sparkly companion, Barbie became available on VOD much sooner as it was still earning millions at the box office, which led to the Greta Gerwig film scoring $1.4 billion worldwide.
For the unaware, the streamer getting Nolan’s films makes for a good sampling of his style and breadth. The Dark Knight trilogy redefined the superhero genre by going about it differently than most, even by today’s standards. Memento will give people a taste of his early work before he became one of the great auteurs of our time. Inception was the start of the people realizing what a high-concept film from Nolan could be while maintaining the big spectacle nature as seen in The Dark Knight. For anyone wanting a historical piece like Oppenheimer, Dunkirk will likely scratch that itch.
