Losing a pet is already something nobody wants to experience, and things become even more devastating when someone gives you fake ashes of your beloved pet. Well, this horrible incident occurred in Pennsylvania, where funeral director Jacob Vereb had the awful idea of scamming 6,500 pet owners. He is the owner of Vereb Funeral Home and Eternity Pet Memorial in Pittsburgh. Instead of doing his job properly, he mishandled cremation services for pets between 2021 and 2024. He didn’t actually cremate the remains of these beloved pets; instead, he threw them into landfills. Then, he gave the families of those pets unknown ashes from random animals. This scam raked in a staggering $650,000.
The investigation is being led by the Office of Attorney General Dave Sunday. On Monday, they charged Jacob Vereb with several serious crimes, including theft by deception, receiving stolen property, and deceptive business practices, all of which are felonies. Vereb, who is 70 years old, turned himself in that afternoon and was officially arraigned. He was later released on his own recognizance, meaning he didn’t have to pay bail to stay out of jail while waiting for his court date.
Sunday described the case as deeply troubling, noting that it brought emotional distress to countless people throughout Pennsylvania. He described the funeral director’s actions as a heartbreaking betrayal of the grieving pet owners who trusted him to provide a respectful and dignified service for their beloved cats and dogs. Given the number of people involved, the Office of the Attorney General has launched a website where victims can share their contact details and any information that might help the investigation. If you’re a Pennsylvania pet owner and think you may have been affected, you can also visit the site to find out if you’re part of the case.
Many internet users were shocked and horrified when they heard the news. They couldn’t believe someone could be so heartless, treating people’s beloved pets like garbage. The idea that anyone would dare to throw out pet bodies instead of properly cremating them left people outraged. “Wait, they threw out bodies completely? No cremation? Also f*** this is so disturbing,” one Redditor commented.
Others wondered why this kind of thing seems to happen so often, pointing out that similar cases have been reported many times in the past. “It’s so weird how often you see this kind of thing happening. I remember when I was in NY, they found out a funeral home was just throwing bodies in the field out back and giving wood ash back to grieving families for years. And it seems like there are 10 to 20 other stories in the past few decades of the same thing,” one Redditor shared.
