The Persona series is continuing to steal both hearts and money across 2020/2021, according to the latest financial reports coming out of SEGA Sammy, the company that owns series developer Atlus. The report, released earlier this week, detailed how successful the Persona series had been between the period of March 2020 and March 2021. Within that period, around 3 million copies were sold from games within the series on multiple platforms.

The report showed that 1.2 million copies were sold in the first quarter, 1.5m in the second, 1.9m in the third, and 1.1m in the final quarter, with a lot of that final figure being attributed to the Western release of Persona 5 Strikers, which recently celebrated selling over 1.3m copies.

The games that primarily drove those sales forward revolve around the most recent and high-profile releases. Those games are Persona 5 and its rerelease Persona 5 Royal, Persona 5 Strikers, and Persona 4 Golden, which recently escaped the doomed PlayStation Vita and made its way onto Steam. These games have received widespread acclaim (particularly the mainline entries) and garnered a big following of fans. The 3 million figure is impressive when you consider that except for Strikers (and to a lesser extent P4G), all of these games have limitations given the platforms they’ve released on. None of these are on all platforms – there’s an element of exclusivity. P5 and Royal are exclusive to PS4 (and PS5), Strikers is only not on Xbox platforms, and Golden remained a Vita-exclusive title for years until it made that leap to Steam last year.

This year marks the series’ 25th anniversary, and while we haven’t had any major game announcements to mark that quarter-century achievement, we remain hopeful that we’ll see something at least announced. There have been domain names re-registered that could hint at a possible fighting game in the same vein as Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4 Ultimax.

When I'm not researching games to potentially add to an ever-growing backlog of games I've never finished, I'm scouting the next wonderkid on Football Manager, or adding my 180th hour to my Persona 5 completionist run. Likes games, and likes talking about them. Surprise, right?
