Phantom Liberty’s New Police System Is Great

Woop-woop, that’s the sound of the police.

It seems like only yesterday that we were all disappointed with the release of Cyberpunk 2077. Despite the game’s great story, many could not enjoy it due to bugs and glitches that remained there for months. One of the biggest was the police system. Veterans of the streets of Night City will remember how doing a crime would summon cops out of nowhere, ready to shoot you without any immersion. But now, thanks to the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, we have a new police system and can confidently say that the long arm of the law is more tangible and fearsome than before.

For those who don’t know, Cyberpunk 2077 has had too many updates that have finally culminated in the product we were always promised. Mind you, it was a long road. We had to wait for a proper update to take advantage of the next-generation consoles. And even then, there were many flaws. It wasn’t until Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty came out that the developers invested their time to fix the police system, one of the most broken and ridiculous systems in the game.

Previously, if you committed a crime, the cops would appear next to you for no apparent reason and start shooting at you. It was so unreasonable that many would rather be the ideal citizen than deal with a cop spawning next to them in the blink of an eye. But now, everything has changed. The streets are protected, and the mini-map is full of blue dots showing the police elements of the city; anything bad you do will alert them, and they won’t let you go until you’re on the ground or you manage to escape. Everything is in balance at last.

As soon as we started our new game in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, we wanted to put the system to the test, and it did not disappoint. We beat up a citizen in the street, and the police started chasing us. It is very similar to other games like Grand Theft Auto. From there, you have an interface with 5 stars; the more stars you have, the more police dispatches are sent out to catch you. Obviously, we got to 5 stars, and the Max-Tac team was not long in coming. This finally made us feel like that trailer we saw at E3. It was an action-packed sequence that ended with our demise, but it was worth every minute of the confrontation.

As fantastic as the new policing system in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is, it still needs tweaking. For instance, we don’t understand why the police are alerted within the gigs. Previously, taking these missions allowed you to do them without alerting the police force. Now, if you shoot near the gig’s location, nearby cops attack you, which breaks the immersion a bit. The same happens with some criminals within the missions where you help NCPD. It’s kind of ironic if you ask us. And yet, we think the system is more than functional and fun. Plus, it’s a good excuse to test your builds and see how far they can go while facing hordes of cops.

The new police system in Phantom Liberty is fantastic because it finally makes us feel the consequences of our illegal acts. While we avoided committing crimes because of the bugs prior, we now avoid doing so because the police are unstoppable. This gives more depth to Night City, which, as you know, is full of scum and villainy. Yes, there are still a few things to fix, but for now, we can say that CD Projekt Red hit the mark. It was a long road, but we can finally enjoy Night City and live our Cyberpunk fantasy.
