Pokemon fans have long been waiting for any news regarding Generation 8. Historically news for the next installment in the core series releases in January. January came and went without so much as a peep from Nintendo or Gamefreak. Well, the wait is finally over.

Nintendo announced on its social media channels that a Pokemon Direct is airing on February 27. Coincidentally, this is 23 years to the day that Pokemon Green and Red versions released in Japan. Whether or not this has anything to do with the flower crown Pikachu and Eevee event remains to be seen.

This announcement comes the same day that the latest Detective Pikachu trailer dropped.

It’s also worth noting that a video highlighting details of each individual region released once a day the week leading up to the direct the Pokemon YouTube channel. Details of the direct came after the videos released.

This is not the first time that the Pokemon Company teased a direct before announcing it. Back in 2013, the official Twitter account posted a pop quiz asking how many evolutions Eevee had. This led many, myself included, to believe news was on the way.

Pokemon Red and Green versions released in Japan on February 27, 1996, and received universal acclaim. The games then released to the rest of the world in 1998, starting with the United States as Pokemon Red and Blue. Seven generations of core games and numerous spinoffs have followed.

Regardless, between the upcoming movie and the pending release for the next generation, this year is shaping up to be the year of Pokemon.

Nintendo Direct Details:

The Nintendo Direct presentation will begin on February 27 at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 2 PM GMT (1 AM AET on February 28). The announcement promised “roughly seven minutes of new information.”
