Pokémon Legends: Arceus is filled with fun requests for players to sink hours of time into, with request #66, ‘The Sea’s Legend,’ allowing fans to catch the mythical Manaphy. ‘The Sea’s Legend’ is one of the lengthier requests in Pokémon Legends: Arceus and requires several steps before catching the coveted Manaphy. If you want to expand your back-in-the-day Pokédex with a legendary creature, we have all the steps right here.

(Updated on August 7, 2024 – Fact-checked and clarified the guide’s steps).

How To Get Manaphy in Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Pokémon Legends: Arceus - The Sea's Legend: Catch Manaphy

Request #66, ‘The Sea’s Legend,’ in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, gives players the chance to catch Manaphy. To unlock the request, check the blackboard on the first floor of Galaxy HQ. The request will appear here as players progress through the game. It is one of the later missions and may be more likely to appear after the main story’s credits.

Upon accepting the request, Professor Laventon will describe a mysterious Pokémon he saw in the Cobalt Coastlands. For the multitude of steps players must go through to complete this request, there are very few directions for how to catch Manaphy. This is because the request is an easter egg of sorts from Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl where players read about how to catch the Pokémon in a library.

Three Pokémon must be in a player’s party in order to catch Manaphy: Buizel, Mantyke, and Overqwil.

  • Buizel can be found in several locations throughout the game, one being the Obsidian Fieldlands, specifically the Horshoe Plains, Windswept Run, and Word Bridge. Higher-level versions of the Pokémon are also in the Cobalt Coastlands on Aipom Hill.
  • Mantyke is found in the water along the Cobalt Coastline, more specifically in Ginkgo Landing and Tranquility Cove.
  • Overqwill is the most difficult to come by as it is the evolution of Qwilfish. Some players may get lucky and find the Pokémon in Tranquility Cove, Lunker’s Lair, or the Islespy Shore of the Cobalt Coastlands. They can also be found in the waters around Ramanas Island in the Obsidian Fieldlands. Players who have trouble finding an Overqwill can also find Qwilfish in all of these locations and evolve it into an Overqwill. To do this, Qwilfish must master the move Barb Barrage, and then the move needs to be used 20 times in a strong style before it can evolve. If the Qwilfish has not already mastered Barb Barrage when caught, giving a Seed of Mastery to Zisu at the Training Grounds in Jubilife Village can get this done quickly.

Once players have Buizel, Mantyke, and Overqwil in their party, it is time to head to the Cobalt Coastline. You must arrive here during the evening so players can sleep at their camp and choose to wake up in the evening if it is not the right time. Then, players must make their way to the ‘middle finger’ part of the hand-shaped Sand’s Reach. Trainers should walk to the end of the ‘finger’ and then use Basculegion to sail through the arched gate. If everything has been done correctly, players will see the dialogue “You heard something that sounded like a cry and a boulder shifting in the distance” at the bottom of the screen.

An opening to the Seaside Hollow cave has now been created where Manaphy can be found. The cave is located just north of Veilstone Cape on the map and is accessible while riding Basculegion from the sea.

Upon entering the cave, Manaphy and several Phione will appear. Players must hit them twice to engage in a 4 vs 1 battle. The Phione are each level 35 while Manaphy is level 50. Trainers can either catch or defeat the Phione but must catch the Manaphy to complete the mission and show it to Professor Laventon. Players shouldn’t worry if they faint, they can simply come back with supplies and different Pokémon and try again.
