Preacher returned tonight with an all new episode titled “Viktor.” For those that follow my reviews will know that I missed last week’s review of “Damsels.” I also review Fear the Walking Dead and if you read my “Red Dirt” review then you know the deal. Unfortunately, a nightmarish start to a family vacation last week pushed my plans back drastically and I missed last weeks review. If you follow regularly then I certainly apologize. Preacher was heavy on the story again this week but a solid fight scene did pop up at the end. In addition to following our characters in New Orleans in their search for God, we again got a look into hell to see just what Eugene was up too.
In last week’s episode “Damsels” one of the biggest things was the reveal of The Grail and Herr Starr. In addition to that, we also saw Tulip being captured at the very end of the episode. While The Grail had only a small role in tonight’s episode, a big reveal came forth with Tulip and Viktor. This week’s Preacher also featured more of Eugene again while he spends his time in Hell. I continue to enjoy Preachers depiction of hell. It’s not something that’s far off that you’d see here. It’s overcrowded, there are malfunctions and quite a cast of characters in the population. What we did begin to see though, was a transformation in Eugene to perhaps…something more sinister.
Eugene’s origin differs slightly from the comics but even now in hell, he still seems like a good kid. His conversation with the block warden, however, makes him begin to think differently. “This is hell, act accordingly.” Eugene takes the advice and ends up helping put a beat down on old Adolph despite the two seemingly getting along. This was another one of my favorite scenes. The reason being is that Adolph Hitler is by far one of the most terrible men in history. His depiction in Preacher has the other inmates standing down from him on fear alone. Finally though, when someone stands up to him, they beat him around like a rag doll. If only our leaders had to fight the wars they start.
Speaking of fighting, the scene with Jesse taking on one of Viktor’s henchman was a fun one. It very much reminded me of the church fight scene back in season one. The earbuds were also a nice touch as to why Jesse couldn’t just shut this guy down like he did the rest of the house. The big question now is, just what did Tulip do to betray Viktor. It’s very obvious throughout the episode that everyone in the house is very mad at Tulip. Only at the end is it revealed that Viktor is actually Tulip’s husband. I can only imagine how Jesse is going to handle this. Him going balls to the wall with Genisis to save Tulip was also fun to see.
As far as the search for God is concerned, Jesse and Cassidy did come up with some clues. I found it a hilarious series of events when it came to finding out where the God impersonator came from that appeared in the finale. This guys audition was so good, they shot him to get him into heaven. It’s this sort of absurdity that continues to make Preacher a show to watch. Jesse now has to find out just who handled the audition. Cassidy tagged along with all of this providing his normal comedic relief but I’m curious to see what his connection is to Dennis. Is this someone Cassidy really knows or knew a long time ago? It seems fairly clear that Dennis is not too happy to have Cassidy around.
The end of this episode also showed that the Saint of Killers is also making his way into New Orleans. This guy doesn’t mess around and I can’t wait to see what next week’s episode brings. Verdict: Dismemberment, Hitler a secret marriage and an arseface? Yes, Preacher returned with a story driven episode but still provided a solid action scene, reminiscent from those we saw in season one. Tulips marriage to Viktor comes as an unexpected twist and we can only wonder how Jesse will handle it. The Saint of Killers is also about to come back into the fold continuing his walk to New Orleans. The pace her is slowed but the story continues to be rich and intriguing.
