Prime Video Team Behind Fallout’s TV Series Call It ‘Fallout 5’

Prime Video might be getting to a version of Fallout 5 before Bethesda can catch up.

As the upcoming Fallout TV series continues production, its creators have said they view it as the next step in Bethesda’s gaming franchise. Instead of re-treading old ground by basing the series on one of the existing Fallout games, the team behind the series at Prime Video has decided to introduce new characters in a brand new location. These changes are set to make the TV series closer to what Fallout 5 might look like rather than an adaptation of an existing entry in the franchise.

First announced earlier this year, the upcoming Fallout series is currently set to be released on April 12, 2024. It’s been confirmed that the series will take place in sunny, irradiated Los Angeles, a brand-new locale for the Fallout games. In that same vein, the series’ creators over at Prime Video have explained that during the creative process, they’ve taken to viewing the series as Fallout 5 – what a new game in Bethesda‘s franchise might look like.

In a panel at CCXP, Fallout TV series showrunner Graham Wagner (Silicon Valley) discussed the direction the show is taking. According to Comicbook.com, Wagner said that the team behind the show is intentionally trying to distance its setting and characters from the games:

“We didn’t start from a place of characters from the games. We set things after…We kind of told ourselves, ‘This is Fallout 5, this is just another installation, and we’re starting with fresh snow.’ But as things go on, things go on. So yeah, again, I am really desperate not to spoil stuff, leave it at that I guess.”

As for the real Fallout 5, Bethesda has confirmed that it’s a game they’d like to make someday. Todd Howard himself has said that Fallout 5 is the next project on deck after The Elder Scrolls 6. Gaming fans familiar with Bethesda’s reputation may want to take this news with a grain of salt; however, since The Elder Scrolls 5 came out over ten years ago, TES 6 doesn’t show a lot of promise for a speedy release. After all, Fallout 4 came out back in 2015.

That said, we’re willing to hold out hope that even if we don’t get a real Fallout 5, then the Fallout TV series is a suitable holdover in the meantime. The TV series is meant to drop on Prime Video on April 12, 2024.
