There’s no doubt the internet has a dark side, helping to sow division and spread hate. But it does every so often allow us to experience moments of truly touching humanity. In a popular video on Reddit, a principal has granted a mother’s dying wish to see her son graduate. The heart-wrenching clip has resonated with many Redditors, reminding us all of our shared humanity.

In the moving clip, the high school principal stands at the bedside of a very sick woman. The woman’s son, dressed in full gown, tenderly holds his mom’s hand. The principal goes on to say that it’s his “pleasure and honor” to name the son a “graduate of Blanchard High School” before congratulating him with a firm handshake and handing him his diploma.

Reddit was quick to praise the moment and the principal in particular, with one user commenting that “this is the kind of principal we need everywhere.” Many Redditors shared moving stories of their experiences with dying relatives, emphasizing the power of stories for uniting us all. In these turbulent global times, it’s these moments of pure compassion that remind us that we’re all human, all in this world together, and we’re all going to leave it at some point.

We’re not the only ones with tears in our eyes as the mom’s dying wish is fulfilled. One comment summed it up neatly, calling the clip, “Heartbreaking and touching at the same time.” Another Redditor echoed our sentiments, that this particular clip should perhaps belong in the MadeMeCry subreddit! I can’t disagree there, not least because I have a lump in my throat even as I type this.

Ultimately, this moving example of compassion should remind us of the pride that many parents have in their children. Sadly, not every parent treats their children with the love and care they should. But precisely because of this tragic fact, those who do should be celebrated and cherished.

At the end of the clip, the dying lady in the clip embraces her son, who struggles to hold back floods of tears. It’s a poignant reminder of how powerful the love between parent and child can be. The memory created of this moment will no doubt remain with both mom and son for the rest of their lives. As one comment pointed out, “Ffs… that hit me hard.” We’d have to agree there.
