In a bit of news under the category ‘unexpected’ comes the reveal that Prison Break is receiving a manga adaptation. Yes, that Prison Break – the 20th Century Fox drama that started airing in 2005 and ran for four seasons. The one that eventually got a fifth season revival in 2017.

So, what’s the deal with this manga adaptation? Well, it’s being penned by cartoonist Hikosuke Soyama and will appear on the digital manga service Piccoma. The manga will start by covering the plot of the show’s first season wherein Michael Schofield gets himself deliberately incarcerated inside a prison to rescue his Death Row inmate-brother, Lincoln, who he believes to be framed for murder. However, Michael is a brilliant engineer and has the map of the prison tattooed onto his skin – this, combined with his gift in the art of deception, gives Michael an edge in his mission to save his brother’s life.

Prison Break

Alas, although the first chapter of the Prison Break manga has been released on Piccoma, there’s no word yet as to when it will make itself known in Western territories.

If the manga is every bit as intense and gripping as its source material, then it will be worth a look. After the first thirteen episodes of Prison Break were aired in 2005, the show won the 2005 People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama. The New York Times lauded the show as “one of the most original” shows of its time, describing it as a “suspenseful thriller” with an “authentic look”. The show’s popularity would lead to its initial season being extended by nine episodes – and a show that would last for four years before an additional fifth season was developed by Fox in 2017.
